2016 new pdf behavior

I have noticed a difference between creating a pdf in 2015 and in 2016 and the differences are new in 2016. It seems to happen whether I use DWG to PDF or one of the newer pdf plotters:

1) Every time I open a pdf that was created in 2016, the thumbnail view on the left side is always visible. If I create the exact same pdf from the exact same drawing in 2015 or older, the thumbnail does not come up as default. This makes me feel as though it must be something inside ACAD causing it. I even tried using my DWG to PDF.pc3 from 2015 in 2016 and it still shows the thumbnail view by default. Then if you open the pdf on a totally different computer, it comes up with the thumbnail view visible by default, so it seems to be something the ACAD plotters are encoding into the pdf.

2) If you create a pdf in 2016, Adobe displays the page number as the page number followed by the drawing name followed by the layout tab name. For example, if you made a pdf by Publishing 4 layouts from a drawing called "Building 1"and the layout tabs were called Elev1, Elev2, Elev3 and Elev4, the page number in Acrobat will display as:

[1] Building 1-Elev1 and then page 2 will say [2] Building 1-Elev2, etc. Prior to 2016, it just said page 1, 2, etc.. I don't thing people that we are sending the pdf files to need to see the drawing name and the layout tab name as part of the page number. I have already had a few people comment on this.

I'm using Acrobat Pro XI and nothing I can find in Acrobat changes this. And the fact that 2015 did not do it proves it is new to 2016. Does anyone know if there are any variables to change either one of these?

Adding new functions with no options is a real problem. I freaking hate renumbering every pdf I create. It's just stupid. Are you listening Autodesk? It's stupid. As in, not smart. Add to this the colors of the layout tabs. Can anyone see if they have more than one selected. No, they cannot. Another mistake. Add to this jamming the Layout Tabs and the hamburger button items on the samel level. I guess this is to maximize drawing space. If I need more space, I will buy a bigger monitor. Thanks for nothing.

Regarding your "jamming the Layout Tabs and hamburger button items on the same level" issue:

Right-click a layout tab and choose "Dock above Status Bar."

Correct, and thank you. I humbly withdraw that complaint.

While you are at it...

Printing directly to a physical printer and pre-2016 'DWG to PDF' did not have this problem:

flipnotspin.jpg

The text is embedded into a block.

The text is "MC" justified.

The text is TTF (have not tried SHX yet).

The block is mirrored.

Print preview looks OK.

Using anything other than this 'DWG to PDF' driver yields what I expect (a mirrored text).

I ran into this issue when I moved from AutoCAD 2015 to 2016 and it caused a lot of headaches for us. We don't want our clients to see the naming convention for our .DWG files.

This new naming convention also becomes a burden when a drawing file has several tabs because all I can see is the first few characters and i'm still unable to see that tab layout name. Thus rendering the naming feature useless.

I stopped using 2016 because of this and had to revert back to 2015. I just made the move to 2017 and see this still hasn't been resolved.

Yep...still an issue. It appears AutoDESK just doesn't care. I just deal with it all day long, every day.

I use regular Adobe Reader XI and I don't see a way to rename files. Does this option exist?

Pretty sure you need full blown Acrobat to rename.

Use a 3rd party PDF driver defined in your pagesetups when you PLOT or PUBLISH: Many of the freeware work just fine.

Unless all you want to do is wait for Autodesk... . We all have workarounds for a lot of things in all software (and operating systems), nothing new.

Ultimately....shouldn't have to rely on a 3rd party printer driver to do it right. It worked fine 2 releases ago.

It really is amazing that they refuse to fix this. I could be wrong, but I would guess that 99% of the users would be happy to see this work like it always did prior to 2016. And as I have mentioned before, there is no reason they cannot give you the options via radio buttons to have neither the pages nor the bookmarks show up when you open it and there should also be a choice to have normal page numbering or screwy page numbering. This way, whomever came up with this disaster can feel as though their idea is still part of Autocad, but everyone that uses the program can ignore it. It really is incredible.

I just draw in 2017 and then open the drawing in 2015 when I want to publish, which is really a pathetic way to have to do it.

Acrobat (std/pro) allows you to renumber/rename pages fairly easy & straightforward. Closing and opening other versions seems much more convoluted.

Really, Mr. Pendean?

When you buy a new car and the radio doesn't work, do you go buy a new radio?

When your new printer isn't "speaking" to your computer, do you go buy a new computer?

When your burger comes slathered in the mayo you didn't want on it, do you just pay the bill and go to a different restaurant?

I don't understand the benefit or logic of being a sheep.

Fortunately, Service Pack One includes an option for turning off the 'SHX text as comments' in PDFs covered in another thread.   I doubt that would have been done if we had all just bit our tongues and used work-arounds.   Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to fix any of the "enhancements" discussed in this thread.

Keep griping, America -- Kool-aid kills.

Or, try -- like I do -- to remind the "wise and powerful" that there are equally-capable, fully-compatible and less expensive CAD packages out there.

Cheers.

You can stop the automatic page numbering NIGHTMARE... Really!

Open Adobe Acrobat.

Go to:

Edit.. Preferences.. Page Display..

Under Page Content and Information, uncheck USE LOGICAL PAGE NUMBERS

Tested and approved.

I just tried this and it worked on a single sheet as well as a multiple sheet. Pretty straight forward; I should have been able to find that without help. Thanks very much for the assistance!

Thanks! That did seem to solve one of the problems. At least I don't have to send out pdf files with that idiotic numbering.

Do you know any way to make it stop from opening with the page display pane open on the left side? I know that if you go into Publish Options and check "create bookmarks" that it will then open to bookmarks pane rather than page display pane, but I don't want either one to open by default. 2015 did not force you to choose one or the other, but then in 2016 they made this change. I personally do not want my pdf files to open with pages or bookmarks extended and it doesn't seem like it should be such a big deal to make it work like it did forever prior to 2016.

Any tips on how to make that go away?

I am using the DWG to PDF.pc3 PDF ePlot Autodesk print driver and it works.  Just to be sure, I changed to a different pc3, and it still works. I don't think it affects the page numbering, but you can also change Adobe Preferences.. Convert To PDF.. Autodesk AutoCAD.. Double click EDIT SETTINGS.. Uncheck Add Bookmark and Uncheck Add Links.

Good luck!

I just tried that, but it is still creating pdfs that open with the page display pane extended on the left.
