Working up from older AutoCAD to AutoCAD Architectural MAC to REVIT

I am working with my brother, an Architect, who has files going back decades to AutoCAD Mac and we are trying to make all of those files in a CAD useable format if possible in preparation for learning and using REVIT.  

We are currently setting up a Mac Pro Later 2103 running Sierra and Parallels 12 with Windows 10.  We would like to find versions of AutoCAD that will open up the older files and set the stage for being able to import them eventually to REVIT if possible.  If we have to stop along the way we'd like at least be able to open and save the files in a flat file format.

How would you suggest this transition?

All versions of AutoCAD open older DWG files.
But only AutoCAD 2016 (with SP1) and AutoCAD 2017 are fully supported in Win10.

Do you know for-a-fact that REVIT cannot open these old DWG files? Or is the intent to use both AutoCAD and REVIT as part of the software transition/learning curve?

If you are able to share a drawing file I can try and test it out for you. 

What file format are most of the drawings?

We are just starting the process and since I wrote the enquiry I've learned that the early files were in AutoCAD 2000 with Architectural Desktop 3.0.  I'm not familiar with that but should be in a week or two.

Install a trial version of a new AutoCAD version and test open a file.
Install a trial version of REVIT and try to open the same file as you did above: not compare. What's lost if anything?

Ultimately only you can determine losses if any so you might as well start testing.

Indeed the approach to take.  Waiting now as the Mac Pro comes up and the very latest Windows 10 Pro is available.  

Was a asking questions as many older Office files don't open in 10 or even in  Windows 7 and was wondering if a similar problem was found in older AutoCAD files and that there was a known work around.

So far that's never been a problem for AutoCAD, and I've never seen the problem in MSOffice products or files either in Win7 or WIn10.
