Symbols/specical characters Mis-displayed

Anonymous
Not applicable

Product: AutoCAD LT for MAC 2017

Symbols/specical characters (i.e. quotation marks, dash, degree symbols) are displayed wrongly (i.e. to characters like Õ, i etc.) every time I re-open a dwg file. How can this problem be solved that the characters can be displayed correctly?

note: I am using a trial version if that makes a difference.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi Bonnie,

It will be better to share one of your drawings with the problem.

HI @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD for Mac forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

There are no differences/limitations in the trial version of AutoCAD.

From the description of your problem it sounds as if a font is not being found so an alternate is being shown.  If you look at the Text Styles in your drawing, which fonts are being utilized and do they all appear to be available?

Is it possible to attach a sample drawing for me to examine?

Thank you for the replies!

When an existing drawing was opened, it notified that the drawing has unsupported objects (as shown in the screen shot below):

After the drawing was opened, some of the text were displayed as below (apologies that I do not currently have access to the cad/files in question so I try to recreate the situations):

AutocadText2.png

While the text should be displayed like this originally:

AutocadText.png

After the drawing was saved and opened by another machine/cad, these changes and weird symbols remained, which leads to a big problem - everytime I open a drawing, the drawing gets corrupted.

The font 'Arial' is being used and the computer should have this font. I have also looked into some previous forum suggestion to similar issues and downloaded the font 'AIGDT' but the problem wasn't solved.

Hi Bonnie,

Your last post just added new questions:
- what kind of unsupported objects are there in the problem drawing?
- what application created those objects?

You can answer my question by selecting "Show details" in "Unsupported objects" window.

Do you know where the problem drawing was created: in AutoCAD for Mac or in AutoCAD for Windows? Which version and localization (for Windows version)?

I have seen similar problem with Cyrillic letters in the drawing created with Russian version of AutoCAD 2013 for Windows with C-Soft SPDS extension. And "broken" texts were the part of C-Soft SPDS extension proxy objects. That time I was able to fix the issue by opening problem drawings in PC version of AutoCAD, and exploding proxy graphics with EXPLODE command. After objects with text were exploded, the texts became readable on Mac.

Hi Maxim,

Please find below the screen shot of the detail:

 Screen Shot 2018-01-08 at 09.02.26.png

And attached please find the corrupted cad file. It was originally created by Autocad LT for Window (English) in an older version (probably 2009). Before corrupted, the file could be opened by another Autocad LT for Mac application without causing any display problems. So I assume that the issue is that my Mac is missing a font which can display and save the character correctly. Should I re-download Arial? As exploding the text wouldn't be an optimistic solution because the text may need to be amended in the future. Thank you very much for the helps!

From your screenshot I see that unsupported objects in your drawing should not affect text objects.

Do you have original version of the problem drawing?

Bonnie,

Can you try to open attached drawing on your Mac?

Do you still see corrupted text?

Hi Maxim,

I don't see corrupted text when it was opened. But after it was saved and opened again the text got corrupted. Please find attached the file after being saved.

Try this:

Change default DWG format for save in the AutoCAD preferences from 2004 version to something higher - 2010 or 2013. Then try to open the drawing I attached to my previous post, save it, close and open again.
What do you see?

If symbols will be correct, then verify you have installed the latest 2017.2 Update to AutoCAD LT 2017 on your Mac:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-lt-for-mac/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autocad-l...

This update also includes 2017.1 update which fihed the issue:
"Characters with accents are corrupted if saved to 2004 or older DWG format." - look at this README file:

http://download.autodesk.com/us/support/files/autocad_lt_for_mac_2017.1_update/AutoCAD_LT_For_Mac_20...

Really appreciate you helps Maxim! It seems to have solved the problem when the files are auto saved to 2007 version. Hopefully the issue won't come back and it helps a lot! Thank you very much.

Good to know I was able to help you.
And yet, I highly recommend installing 2017.2 Update.
