Stretch doesn't create a rectangle for selecting objects

I am using AutoCAD 2019 LT for Mac. I have been using it all year with no problems. Last week, when I tried to select objects using the Stretch command, instead of creating a rectangle, the area that is selected is an amorphous shape that is just the trace of how the cursor moved. In other words, it's acting like orthomode was turned off. Orthomode is on, but I have been told that it doesn't need to be on for stretch to work.

I can't upload a screenshot, because as soon as I let go of the mouse button it just shows which objects have been selected.

Has anybody seen this problem or have a suggestion as to how I can fix it?

Hi Andy,

That is because you pick and drag mouse with LASSO selection method is turned on:

To turn off LASSO selection method you need to set system variable PICKAUTO=3 (instead of default 5):

Thanks. Must've had a mind warp. I was quite sure clicking and dragging created rectangle. I guess I also misunderstood somebody else who told me just last week that it created a rectangle. Oh well.
