Shift+Drag to deselect objects no longer working after selection cycling enabled

For some reason, I can no longer shift+drag my mouse to deselect. I have to be right over the object, and this is a major inconvenience. I am not sure how it got that way, but it wasn't this way before. 

I am using Autocad for Mac 2018. Please help!

Hi Katherine,

Please verify PICKAUTO System variable:

It should be 5 (the default value) to allow crossing (window, fence) lasso selection, that is selection by dragging.
