selection settings in autocad for Mac

I've been following a tutorial and in some instances am unable to complete commands as instructed because my selection seems to be set to show different parts of the geomentry. I've attached a screen shot in the hope that some can show me which setting I need to adjust please.

Hi Luke,

You can use Ctrl+click on 3D object part you want to select

or

- set subobject filters on the Status Bar:

Thanks for your suggestions, I've tried both and can't still seem to get the same selection as the tutorial video and subsequently slice the object in question. I don't have the same icon either after entering the SLICE command? see attached screenshot.

Are you watching an AutoCAD FOR WINDOWS tutorial by chance, which looks totally different, instead of an AutoCAD FOR MAC tutorial?

Now I see what you mean.
It is selection cycling badge. On Mac you can turn selection cycling on by changing SELECTIONCYCLING system variable from -2 (default) to 2:

You will not see Selection dialog box on Mac, online help is incorrect in this case, but you will see the badge.

Thanks for the tip on selection cycling which was useful though has not resolved the issue for me as the attached screen shot shows my screen on the right and the tutorial on the left with different parts of the geometry showing in blue after both following the same procedures. This is a windows tutorial and whilst it has been quite maddening at time to align my understand of if to my Mac version, having looked around I could not find a Mac based course of sufficient depth and am learning also by working out the differences between both platforms. This situation has got me stumped as I'm unable to complete the SLICE command as required. I'm going to re do the drawing from scratch to see whether I've constructed it differently in any way that could account for the way it's behaving when trying to select the nut only but would be grateful for any advice you can offer as to how I would select the nut though as visible within the wider surface.

This now has me really stumped. Can't work out why when I select the surface on my version of the geometry having checked it's construction again, the edges of the nut remain beneath the surface selection and not protruding as in the example on the left. Is this to do with layers perhaps? see attached screen shot.

From your screenshot I clearly see that the upper surface in your drawing is higher than in the frame of the video tutorial. Therefore, the nut is hidden under it:

BTW, it is very difficult to diagnose your problems without having at hand the tutorial itself and the results you have in completing the assignment.
