pc dwg to mac

Hi

I am a pc user an have auto cad Lt 2006 with created dwg files. I am making the transition to A MacBook Pro with a mac version of auto cad LT. The question is if I put my pc dwg files on a USB can I be able to view and edit these on my mac or do I need some software to convert windows dwg to mac dwg.

Hi Lyndon,

AutoCAD for Mac (full and LT) can open DWG files created on PC. You don't need any "conversion" utility.

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD for Mac forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

It can be an adventure switching platforms. Yes, as Maxim has indicated, the drawing formats between the Windows version and that of the Mac are identical. Be aware that any drawings in the new 2018 file format should be converted before you move them to the Mac as the current 2018 version of AutoCAD LT  for Mac will not be able to open them.

I suggest that as you make the transition you keep a copy of your PC AutoCAD customizations such as template files, linetypes, custom fonts, etc as well as all your data in case you need any of it in the future (BACKUP is always good).

Thanks for your reply.
Would be worth me buying windows 2018 LT for my mac and use parallels which means I can then open and use my old windows LT. It sounds a bit heavy handed to put a windows 10 on my mac and by the 2018 windows LT but would prefer to have the Mac version of LT and use another software to open the windows dwg files but dont know if this can be done. on my research I came across Microspot would this work.

Why don't you sign up for the Mac Beta of 2018 AutoCAD?  This would let you test the product to see how well it works and you could also install a trial version of AutoCAD for Mac 2017 at the same time.

I run the Mac versions on my Macbook Pro and really enjoy how well they function.  When I need to convert a 2018 file, I switch to my Bootcamp partition and run Trueview or AutoCAD 2018 to save in the older format. Trueview is free and might be a good workaround for now.. None of this is seamless as updated AEC and other proxy objects don't always save down to older versions very nicely.

Thanks for the reply. I dont know what mac Beta is.
My story is I have windows 10 with Auto cad LT 2006 and happy with the LT version. I have ordered the Macbook pro and not sure to run windows 2017 or 18 on the Mac which means yes having bootcamp or parallels. I merely be using this just for the cad.
Or just obtain the Mac 2017 or 18 LT for Mac but I still want to open and use some of the 2006 drawing details I have on my old computer for my Mac LT.

Hi @Anonymous,

This might be easier than you think. If you are a subscription customer then you are actually able to use both AutoCAD LT for Windows and AutoCAD LT for Mac, This means you can run the native Mac version as well as install your Windows 10 in Parallels or Bootcamp to run the Windows version.

The Mac version should be able to open your PC drawing files as the format is the same.

Dear Lyndon - I have the same 2016 version of AutoCAD LT as you and also want to switch to MAC version. I also want to be able to open old files on the new MAC version. I read the query you sent and wonder what you decided on and if it worked? Thank you, Angie

Hi Autocad and people,

I would like some Advise or help on a Situation, I've got AutoCAD 2018 LT on a PC, but I've recently bought a Macbook Laptop, what I'm wanting, is advise, this will be used when I'm out of the office, can I ask, I have a Subscription for AutoCAD LT for PC, will this license cover me for using on my MAC? or would I need to buy a second license to run on my Mac Book? if you could let me know, that would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can install and use AutoCAD on the second machine (PC or Mac) and use it.
