No Rendering Option on AutoCad Mac 2018 ( Student Version )

Hi I have just installed the 2018 Autocad on my Mac yesterday and whilst designing a 3d project for my college graded unit I have realised I am unable to render.

In the past versions I was able to render to the cloud and also render in a separate window but this isn't available in this version.

Is this because this is a student free software ?

HI @gavin_o_1,

Yes, sadly you are correct that Rendering is no longer a feature of AutoCAD for Mac 2018. The last version that offered Rendering (to the Cloud) was AutoCAD for Mac 2017.  There are no differences between the Student (Educational) versions and the full version of the application.

Why did Autodesk decide to remove one of the most critical features of this program?  This move is like selling MS Word with no option to print.

I'm about to drop $1500 for this semi-functional software, and if I can't render, it's utterly useless to me.  Does Autodesk still provide customers with the option to download older versions of their software, and if so, what version of AutoCAD for Mac will I need to get in order to Render from my own machine?

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi,

2016 was the last version of AutoCAD for Mac with off line rendering engine.
Check your subscription account if you have access to it.

BTW, you can also use Cloud Rendering if you have such option in your subscription.

Can you explain the workflow/process for doing that? Im currently using Autocad for Mac 2018 and only see materials and lighting options in my visualize toolbar. I dont see an option to render to the cloud or upload out of the program.

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi Larry,

You need to login to your Autodesk account here:

https://gallery.autodesk.com/a360rendering

Then select "New" option and upload your drawing to the cloud rendering service.

And one more thing:
In order to be able to upload drawing to cloud rendering, you need Flash Player installed in your browser, so if you don't have it in Safari, I'd recommend you to use Google Chrome.

thanks..so any level of running test renders to look at materials, lighting etc all has to be done as an upload to the cloud rendering portal? That seems to be a huge workflow interruption.

AutoCAD is one of the last tools I would choose for rendering... it's much more oriented towards content creation.

AutoCAD always was wonderful all-in-one Swiss knife. Why to strip it off it's features?

AutoCAD without rendering is useless... that's it.

Unfortunately, corporate greed is at play here. Stripping functionality/ usability in the pursuit of short term $ for the shareholders in return for larger $ for the  C suite jockeys, who btw don't give a dam about the product, company, its future or the users,  as once they serve 2 or 3 years and have increased short term turnover they will move on to destroy yet another company in their relentless climb over each other up the corporate ladder.

Of course, Autodesk will fall, like all other companies that employ almost predatory tactics to their own products.

I have used Autodesk for over 30 years and am now bewildered by its retrograde ethos and am now seeking alternatives.
