Hi, I need to delete several drawing layers that came with a drawing that was given to me. I am trying to purge items that are slowing the program down as I frequently get freezing with the spinning color wheel. I only use about 5 layers, could you let me know how to delete the ones I don't use? Also, any tips for cleaning up the file so it runs more efficiently - I received file from a large architectural firm but I only need to do simple drafting (no blocks, no xrefs, etc). Would appreciate any tips you may have!

It is about AutoCAD for PC, but most of tricks will work in AutoCAD for Mac too.
(On Mac, unfortunately, you are limited with command line version of PURGE command, but it could be powerful enough.)
I'd also suggest you to try WBLOCK command with "Objects" option in order to write to new file only objects you really need in the drawing.
If you don't need blocks, you can explode them with EXPLODE command, then you will be able to purge block definitions from the drawing. After that you can change Layer property of the objects in the drawing to one of the 5 layers you will use later, then you will be able to purge all unused layers.
BTW, after you explode blocks, you can simply drag off Layer from Layers Palette and select "Delete Layer and move its content to another layer" option:
