Mouse won’t scroll horizontally or vertically

Just download AUTOCAD 2018 version on my MacBook high sierra.. when I open a drawing (autocad.dwt) it only lets me zoom.. I cannot scroll horizontally or vertically in order to draw further than what the display shows. HELP!  I don’t want to have to manually click the controls in the menu bar for PAN in order to move my view.. it would take too much time. It’s like my screen or mouse pad is locked and it won’t let me see anything else besides what the display shows
