Modelspace background colour

I like a white background in modelspace, and I get that when in 2d wire frame. But as soon as I switch to conceptual or any other view, all I get is a black (or grey) background. Why can I only get a white background when in 2d wire frame? Using AutoCAD 2021 for mac. Thank you.

Hi Maxim,

Can I just check your solution to the problem of changing background colours in views other than 2D wireframe?

Your solution worked for me when I tried it before, but not now. I seem to be stuck on black and the view options in the top left-hand corner are in a dark colour, which means that unless I hover over them, they are completely invisible.

What can I do?

Thank you,

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Do you want to change the color of the Viewport Controls?

Hi Maxim,

I want to change the colour of the viewport controls and also the model space background in all views, not just 2D wireframe.  Why is AutoCAD for Mac (2023) so easy to change in 2D wireframe but almost impossible in conceptual or realistic, etc?

Thank you.

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately it is not possible to change the color of the Viewport Controls in AutoCAD for Mac. Even if you will try to change Environment Variable which controls Viewport Controls text color, it will not be changed on Mac. It always will be black with blue highlight when you hover mouse on it.

As about the background color in Visual Styles other then 2D Wireframe - you can change it by changing the value of

"Parallel background" Environment Variable as described in the post I referred above.

I know that changing the value of

"Parallel background" Environment Variable does work because I’ve done it several times. The trouble is, it only works some of the time - it’s completely unpredictable. But I will try again.

Many thanks for all your help Maxim.

Kind regards,

Mark.

Mark,

If you change the view inside viewport from Parallel to Perspective, then in Perspective view "Parallel background" Environment Variable doesn't work.

You need to change a couple other Environment Variables to change display background color for perspective view:

Perspective color
Perspective end color

Perspective bk color

Perspective start color

.....

Excellent advice. Thank you, Maxim. I’ll certainly try that tomorrow. In the meantime, can I ask one more question: you give the colour# for white as 16777215. This doesn’t appear to be the RGB colour; or is it? Where do these codes come from?

Best regards,

Mark.

It is special AutoCAD OLE_color which is used in AutoCAD Environment variables.

Standard RGB colours can be converted with this AutoLISP attached. APPLOAD it and use Color_Convert command to see AutoCAD OLE_color number of selected color.

Thank you, Maxim.  I’m not having much luck. The “Color_Convert.lsp” won’t open and prompts me to search for an app to open it, in then told an app isn’t available.  Also, the file size is only 6kb, is that correct?  The LISP expressions have no effect, although they have  in the past. So I know they do work, but only sometimes, or rarely even, and knowing when they work seems entirely unpredictable.

Maxim, something I'm wondering...

The instructions given are:

  1. Open any drawing file.
  2. Input the LISP for the desired change as previously described.
  3. Confirm with ENTER.
  4. Close the drawing file.
  5. Reopen any drawing and check the applied change by switching to a 3D perspective projection.

Between '4' and '5' should there be 'Save'?

In order to be able to use AutoLISP routine you need to load it in AutoCAD:  with APPLOAD command at first.

AutoCAD should ask you if you want to load it, you should select - Load.

After you load it, you can use new command - COLOR_CONVERT. Just type it in the command window and hit Return to start it.

No, you don't need to save the drawing as you perform changes on AutoCAD application level, but not in the particular drawing.
