Can't join lines to form polylines

Can't join lines to form polylines

Hello there,

I got a 2d City Plan and want to create a 3D model from it. Unfortunately I can't manage to extrude the line around the "Houses". As I understand they are no Polylines, so I tried to convert the lines to Polylines. But the command PEDIT won't work on it. I don't know what to do.

I would really appreciate some help, because otherwise I have to redraw all houses with Polylines and there are a looooot of "Houses".

Thank a lot.

Greets, Anni

The object you have selected in your screenshot is not a 'Line'. 'Schraffur' = Hatch??

Do you actually have any 'line' objects or is it just a hatch without a boundary?

If it is just a hatch, you can recreate the hatch boundary as a polyline. See here.

If you already have lines and they just don't want to join, check do the ends of the lines actually coincide exactly? If not, you can adjust the "Fuzz" value when you Join in PEDIT command. (At least, this option exists in AutoCAD for Windows, so i think it will also exist for Mac version)

If you need further help, we probably to know:

  • what is your AutoCAD version (2017, 2018, 2019 etc)
  • what exactly happens when you try to use the command? Do you get any error messages? What does it say in the commandline at the bottom of your screen?
  • can you share the geometry (just the lines you are trying to join) so we can experiment on our own systems?

If you are attempting to join single line segments into a polyline and it doesn't work, it is possible

that the line segments are non-coplanar.

If you have Express Tools loaded, try the FLATTEN command to change all the z-values of lines to zero (0).

Hi!

Thanks for your help. You are right, its a Hatch. I am a complete beginner with this program.

My problem now is that I still can’t transform the hatch into Polylines.
Here is what I did:

1. Select Hatch and click on Begrenzung erstellen (recreate Boundry)

2. Chose Polylines

3.

And when ask „Connect hatch with new Boundary?“ I tried Yes and No…

But still no Polylines. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

Thanks in advance!!

Greets, Anna

Hi Anna,

Can you share your drawing (or a part of it with some of the hatches) here? I'll look at it and will try to figure out the problem.

And another question:
What do you see in the Command window (AutoCAD respond) when you select Polylines as an option for recreating hatch boundaries? Maybe that could explain the issue.
But still sharing your drawing (or a part of it), of course, will be better option.

Hi,

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Shall I just share the DWG file with you? Maybe that's the easiest way?

Or what do you mean by share  a part of the drawing?

Cause I posted already a picture above.

Thanks a lot.

I mean attach your drawing (DWG itself, not a screenshot) here.
You can send it directly to my email:
mkanaev@yandex.ru
I'll look at it and will return with answer here. OK?

Hi Anna,

The case of the problem (you couldn't see polylines when you created them from hatches) is that the current layer was turned off, hatches were created, but they were on layer that was invisible.

I sent your drawing back with a couple of polylines (hatch boundaries) created with a button on Hatch Visor. I created new Layer «$POLYLINES», made it current and ON, then I used «recreate hatch boundary» button in Hatch Visor to create hatch boundaries as polylines.
