Icon Menu - Circuit Breakers

Why do I have to go to Fuses or Motor Control  and then another click to get into Circuit Breakers?

Circuit Breakers and Disconnects should be a single click as soon as you go to the Icon Menu. If you want a link under Fuses and Motor Control that's fine, but the main location should be at the root level.

Hi there,

Icon Menu Wizard.  You can open the schematic and the panel Icon Menu(s) with the Wizard and move the icons to the screen of your choice.

Good luck

True, but then I upgrade to the next version and I'll have to do it again.

On top of that I teach AutoCAD Electrical several times a month so if I do that to all of my training machines, the students will not be able to find the circuit breakers when they get back to their office. Unless I teach them to do the same thing - every time they upgrade.

So while that is an obvious solution, the point is - the Icon Menus should come that way out of the box and not be something the users have to fix over and over again.

Hi Rick

What version of software are you running and what libraries are you looking at? I am on the latest 2017 version referencing libraries IEC-60617, see attached PNG, breakers are top level of the tree.

Image looks like IEEE. Most here in the states use NFPA or JIS

It is the IEC-60617 menu DAT. You could design the menu DAT file for your clients and give it to the ones that want it, if it is a common requirement.

Everyone should be using a custom DAT file if the software is configured correctly. Configuring the menu is not really fixing it, it is part of the basic standard functionality, however I do agree circuit breakers should be top level.

The majority of users are not advanced enough to know how to make changes to the icon menu and very few of my clients use a custom DAT file.

Since this is a common complaint with my students and clients and this is a "wish list" forum, it would be a very simple fix for Autodesk to  move the circuit breakers to the top level of the JIS and NFPA DAT files as they are in IEC and IEEE menus and make life easier on especially the new users.

That is a very concerning statement. Being able to customize the menu is essential for getting value out of the product and it is also a very simple process.

Sorry but I disagree with that. I was a CAD Manager for over 15 years and the last thing I wanted or permitted was for one of the users to go messing around with the menu system. That is a job for the CAD Manager not the CAD User. From a training perspective, while editing the menu is simple it is a process that is covered in the Advanced class not the Fundamental.

Plus, I do not encourage modifying the out of the box menu system and always suggest clients use a secondary menu system for all customization. In my opinion, the only customization that should be done to the out of the box menu system is a link to the company secondary menu system. This also makes upgrades simple and fast.

I totally agree, the out of the box menus should not be edited, which is why in my previous statement I said all users should be using a custom menu DAT.

The custom menu DAT can be easily modified to meet the clients needs, there is no need for a primary and secondary menu, you can start from a copy of an 'out of box' menu DAT and edit from there. Whether it is the user or the CAD manager that edits the menu DAT is irrelevant. Once edited the problem is solved. I don't think it is a big issue since everyone should have a custom menu and should have made alterations to meet their needs prior to using the software.

You have a good point breakers should be at the top but each client will want different things at the top so it not really something that Autodesk need to 'fix'.
