Project Manager and VPN

While working from home through VPN, everything is very slow.  I am running 2020. I have narrowed it down to project manager for some reason, even though it is only like text files etc that the PM is referencing.  It takes forever for ACADE to even open up.  There is no other differences from working from home vs in office aside from going through my internet (which is fast internet) and VPN.  If I close down, go to work, open up ACADE it's nice a fast again.

Can someone please help explain why this is as it doesn't make any sense.  Maybe a solution?

Any file that ACADE has to read or write to while you're connected via VPN is going to slow things down. If possible, move everything local to your hard drive and just work straight from there. If you share catalogs or symbols over a network, or if you keep any of the project database files in locations that can only be accessed through the VPN, slower performance is just part of the game. No way around it, it just takes time for ACADE to access that file, open it, read it, write changes to it, and close it.

When everything's local, that all happens quicker than we can think. When that data has to be transmitted, made to travel through a secure, private network, received, and so forth, wait times become very noticeable.

Well that is exactly what we are doing, I just figured as robust as our work network is and as fast as my home internet is it would work fine.  We do share everything on the network, we are just now trying to do more with vault and we have vault basic so I might try to use that more.

Thank you.

Technically, I don't think it matters how fast the internet is at your home or at the workplace. I tend to think about it the way a gamer would: it's all about the ping.

When gaming, a low ping is desirable, it tells you basically how long it takes for information to travel between your gaming console and the server hosting the game. A low ping means that sent packets arrive back quickly. A high ping means it's taking longer.

At work, even with all of your stuff shared on the network, your ping is essentially nothing, because nothing is traveling farther than size of your building, for example.

While at home and working over VPN, the physical distance that every bit of information has to travel has increased by a very large amount, which manifests as the 'lag' you're seeing i.e. software performance. If your VPN's routers are located on the other side of the country, you'll see more lag than you would if the VPN were in your own city. It's all about the distance between you, and the server(s) hosting your VPN.

Keep the number og projects in the project manager to a minimum. AcadE does some checking for ALL drawings in ALL projects a lot of the time, especially when opening a drawing.
So... That's what makes it so slow.
