No color in exported fbx in HoloLens

Hi,

I am trying to export a 3D model of a control panel to .fbx format for use with the HoloLens. Using AutoCad Electrical 2018 3D workspace on Win10. Although I have added texture (various colours of plastic, tried both face and layer) the model appears white or grey in 3D viewer beta (HoloLens) and in MS 3d Paint. Is there a solution/workaround for this?

Hi @Anonymous,

I tested this in AutoCAD 2018. I opened a simple model of a cedar  planter box that I built a couple of years ago.

I used FBXEXPORT and then opened the file in 3DS Max.  As you can see in this image, the wood material did come across.  If you like, please try the attached FBX in your programs to see how it comes through.

Hi,

I tried the file in Paint 3D, MS Mixed reality viewer  and FBX Review (don't have the HoloLens at home) but all of them only shows shades of gray. Have been experimenting with various objects, all down to a single cube with a generic material, but no joy.

This is from MS support pages: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13766/hololens-using-3d-viewer-on-hololens

  • Maximum FBX release 2015.1.0

 Textures

  • Texture maps must be embedded in the FBX file
  • Supported image formats
    • JPEG and PNG images
    • BMP images (24-bit RGB true-color)
    • TGA images (24-bit RGB and 32-bit RGBQ true-color)
  • Maximum texture resolution of 2048x2048
  • Maximum of one diffuse map, one normal map, and one reflection cube map per mesh
  • Alpha channel in diffuse textures causes pixels to be discarded if below 50%

Hi @Anonymous,

I am not sure how to determine the format version of the FBX file.  I am attaching another one that was exported from AutoCAD 2015. Please test this to see if it works.

Still the same, I'm afraid.

HI @Anonymous,

I am afraid that AutoCAD is writing a much newer format of FBX than what Hololens expects.

I went back into 3DS Max and used the game utility to save this down to 2015 format. Let's see if this file works any differently.

Hi @Anonymous,

Did the last file I sent you work?  I am thinking that this is just a version issue but would like you to confirm whether or not it worked.
