make Cable Conductor List with Wire Numbers?

I'd like to be able to make a quick report or list of the conductors in a cable.

-show the conductor # list

-show the associated wire number for each conductor

-ideally work in schematic or panel dwgs

We use standard cable parent and child markers

If I run an XREF on a cable, it "almost" works, but the list omits the parent conductor

We don't always assign LOC codes at either end, so the "From/To" report might not help

Our current workflow:

-in schematic, draw cable using standard cable and child markers

-in panel/layout drawing, insert the cable (we have circles representing the cross section of the cable, but could be anything)

-from Panel ribbon item, choose "Wire Annotation"

-in the popup dialog, select "Wire Number Only"

-we get a text table, but again, I believe it omits the parent conductor

{I think we edited "by hand" to show the parent}

-example result here below

In this example, our wire number format is SSSRN, so this cable appeared schematically on sheets 520,560,561,562

{We should have had an XREF to the cable conductor child, I missed that in this example}

What's the motivation:

-for cables that span several sheets, its a convenient way to visualize what's been used so far

-convenient for wire man

~we probably don't want to use it on "simple" cables that only span a single sheet - ie we'd like to "pick" on the ones we want to report

The best way to do this would be to do some API stuff. Extract the wires from the scratch database and place the information in a multi-line attribute on the "panel-symbol" for your cable.

So, let's learn the programming language Lisp, from 1958, and do some programming 😄

Turns out "to/from" report works with some massaging

  • I run the To/From report.
  • Select From All and To All
  • Run Report
  • I use columns CBL, CBLWC, WIRENO, LOC1, CMP1, LOC2, CMP2
  • The LOCs and CMPs just tell what the cable is connected to, useful for navigation/double-checking, won't actually use them
  • Sort by  CBL, WIRENO  ~ you'll never satisfy the wiremen -half want to sort by CBLWC, half by wire#
  • Save to Excel
  • Open Excel sheet
  • You now have all the WIRENO for a cable tabulated in one place.
  • For a given cable, select the CBLWC and WIRENO (2 columns, multirow)  and copy (CTRL-C) from Excel

Jump back to dwg

Paste - by default autocad makes a little spreadsheet (which isn't exactly what I want)

I'd prefer MTEXT - but this doesn't work - it only posts one of the CBLWC

Anyways the goal here was to make a little chart of the cable on the dwg

Hmm... That was a lot of steps, and maybe not very helpful for the motivation:

"for cables that span several sheets, its a convenient way to visualize what's been used so far"

But, I'm glad you figured out something that work for you.
