When you say Substation Design, what areas are you talking about?

Land Use - Surveying

Building Layout - that's Architectural & Mechanical Engineer

Electrical Protection and Layout - Electrical Protection Engineer

Control Systems - Electrical Design/Engineer specialising in Substation Design & Electrical Protection

Local Light & Power - Electrical Contractor and Architectural

There is plenty more that goes into designing a substation and no one person does it all.

I design control systems and do the schematics for 11kV indoor and 33kV outdoor circuit breakers. The company I work for sells those breakers to the utility companies that have the breakers installed in various substations (new and refurbished).

We have supplied less than a handful of actual substation buildings (transportable) and they were built by subcontractors who designed and built the units to suit the breakers we supplied and the clients specifications. We only got the buildings once everything else had been done so we could install the breakers. Then they were shipped off to the client for the client. The important thing is that we did not design or approve the buildings, we where just the main contractor to the client and relied on the experience and knowledge of the sub contractor and client for the building design.

I am a licenced electrician who has a logical mind that makes control design easy for me to do. All dwgs get checked by our electrical engineer before being sent to our client to be then checked and approved by their electrical engineers before we start construction.

As you can see, designing a substation is a long and involved process that include multiple disciplines. You have to let us know which part of the process you are wanting to specialise in. It would also pay to check with your countries requirements for educational requirements/training/degrees for the areas you are interested in working in.

In that case, you need to look into what India require for an Electrical Engineer's Degree first before you specialise in the substation design area.

Look to your local universities and ask them about Degree courses for electrical engineers.

Once you have your electrical engineers degree, look for a company that builds substations and try to get some experience in the field.

I'd suggest a year, two at the most. It will also allow you to recover from all the stress of getting your degree.

Then and only then, ask around other engineers you are working as to any courses they recommend to further specialise in the work.

Also check at the university you got your degree from.

Keep an eye out for courses/seminars from independent training companies as they can cover things that university courses may not.

hi Brad

I read your answer,

I have experience in substation designing for 2 to 3 years long time ago and I am well conversant with the theory of substations and how they operate.

But I am new to drawings.I know simple AutoCAD stuff like layers and basic commands like xrefs.

What I am trying to draw is a simple line diagram for a 500KV/220KV/132KV substation

and then try to transfer into AUTOCAD inventor to make it 3D

My areas of expertise is substation PRIMARY design including transformer, breaker, voltage regulators, isolators, CT, VT, surge arrestors and buses.

and also conduits and underground wiring.

Can you please guide me where to start?

I have been watching YouTube videos but I just need some basic steps.

Thanks,

Check with the company you work for and see if they will pay for any training courses that your local Autodesk reseller provides.

These usually cover the separate packages and you may need to take two or three courses over a period of time to cover what you need.

Depending on what you know, you may be able to skip the basics or intermediate courses.

They should also be able to advise you on what programs you need to fit your requirements. If you only use Electrical for the single line diagrams, you will be wasting a fair bit of it's abilities. You might find plain ACAD a better fit there. Inventor is more for designing complex 3D dwgs of objects than doing site layouts, for something like that, yo may be better of using the program designed for it.

Do the relevant CAD courses first if you haven't already done that, followed by the other courses for the software being used for the site layout.

The other option is to check yor local college/training centres and such to see what courses (and costs) they offer in CAD.

Hey I am really interested in Local Light & Power - Electrical Contractor and Architectural, especially electrical side where and specialize in designing the cad design from the substation transformer to the neighborhood housing whether it is overhead or underground, and local lighting as well in north America and was wondering if you can provide me with proper courses, Thanks you very much

If you are looking to get into the reticulation design, I don't recommend Electrical.

Autodesk does have a an application for street design and the electrical reticulation should be a part of that.

Again, you should ask your local universities and companies that do the reticulation about any required courses and programs used. They would be able to give a better answer as that is one of the areas I have no knowledge of.
