CAN'T CHANGE CATALOG ASSIGNMENT WIHT INSERT/EDIT COMPONENT (AEEDITCOMPONENT)

I'm using Autocad Electrical 2017 SP1 on WP7 SP1 and in the past few days I have this error coming up on some projects: when I want to change the catalog part number already assigned to a component with the AEEDITCOMPONENT command it won't accept the value manually typed into the CATALOG box only a selection form the CATALOG database. The value typed in is replaced with the previous value when confirming OK in the edit component dialog window.

This is only happening for existing components in the drawing and not new ones added after opening the drawing. Also this error doesn't come up for every project, as far as I see it's either random or the criteria is beyond my comprehension.

It's been only a 2 weeks since I had to reinstall AE2017 and I don't yet feel like doing it again. I have AE2013 still installed on the PC, could this be the issue?

Any suggestion is welcomed.

Fixed/unfixed tags shouldn't affect the catalog.

I'm also on ACADE 2017 here and I can't reproduce this issue no matter how hard I try to break stuff. So, can we have a little more info?

What are your catalog preferences in your Project Settings? (See image.)

What workflow are you using, exactly, to do the edit? Are you typing AEEDITCOMPONENT at the command line, using the radial context menu, toolbar button, etc. Have you tried other ways to access the command, and if so, did they give you the same results?

Are you trying to edit a component that came to be as a result of a copied circuit, or a circuit builder circuit?

Have you rebuilt the database (AEREBUILDDB)?

Before reinstalling, try doing a Reset To Default. If that doesn't do it, then try a Repair. Generally, you should try both of these before a reinstall.

The fix/unfix tag selection doesn't solve the problem. The issue persist if I call it from the right click context menu or type the command. Catalog and libraries are set to the default, all projects have the same path (see screenshot). Audit drawing and rebuild database are some of the first things i tried, didn't solve the problem. The most puzzling is how random it seems to be affecting only some projects and so far only existing components and not newly added ones.

I performed a reset to default, problem persist even with the vanilla settings without loading my customized settings. Performed a repair but the problem persists.

Anything else I could try?

A couple more follow up questions...

Are you the only user? Do you use Vault? If you're not the only user, what happens with the others if they try to replicate this?

If you use the circuit clipboard to copy out that motor circuit, and then paste it into a fresh, clean drawing, what happens with the overload symbol? Same behavior?

Are the affected blocks custom symbols, maybe?

You said only existing symbols are affected, not new ones. Have you tried killing the bad symbols and replacing them with new ones?

What's the history on the drawing? Has it always been in your control (ie, not passed between multiple users)? Has it behaved properly in the past?

I tried again to duplicate this here, after watching the screencast. Still nothing.

I thought 'maybe the catalog number is set in the attribute field in the actual block, and that's why the catalog assignment won't change'. But, no. I have a couple of blocks like that, and I was able to change their catalog info via component edit.

I don't think a reinstall will do anything....I'm leaning towards something being wonky in the drawing or project. Can you post a drawing? (Remember to remove any important info from your title block, etc)

We may need to kick this up and have it logged.

I had this happen to some dwgs in the ACADE 2014 release.

It is completely random and extremely hard to pin down.

For example, I've changed a catalogue entry on a component with no problems and then later had to change the catalogue selection again and had the problem. Restart the machine and sometimes the problem would go away and other times the problem would persist. It also only affects some components within a dwg rather than all of them. I had it occur with OOTB blocks and custom blocks so it wasn't anything to do with faulty blocks.

I never did find out what was causing it and just worked around it. Easy way to fix it is to delete the affected block and insert a new copy.

I just retracted the wires from the connections beforehand, and then extended them afterwards so that any wire numbers didn't get affected.

In reply to both jseefdrumr & Icemanau, continued testing and managed to
isolate the problem as being caused by the panel footprint:

- If I change the component tag without updating cross references
to the new tag or delete its panel footprint then it behaves as expected.

- If I change the catalogue value on the footprint and allow cross
reference updates it will change the catalogue value for the component
symbol as well.

- If I insert a new component symbol and not assign panel footprint
it behaves normally. When I assign a panel footprint the issue returns.

Is there a way to reset the link between component symbol and footprint?

I'll try to fix the problem by deleting the panel layout from the project
and create a new layout from a clean template.



Some other things I've tried:

- Drawings are shared between 3 users, the other 2 can edit the
catalog value without any issues. They saved the drawing but once I open it
it's the same, can't change the new value. We do not use Vault.

- When I copied the affected symbol to a new drawing that's not
part of the project I can edit and save the new values. However when I added
the new drawing to the active project the issue persist. It didn't matter if
I copied the component before or after adding the drawing to the project.

- The symbols are standard, from the included NFPA library

- I'm not sure what caused the issues to appear, just noticed a few
days before my first post. Most recent Windows updates were 3 weeks before,
no ACE updates. For new software all I see is a Java update a week before.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Your thorough reply (thanks, btw) was helpful in showing that there aren't very many variables coming in to play here. And really, figuring out that it has something to do with the footprints helped the most. From your description, it kind of sounds more like it's the layout drawing itself more than an individual footprint, because you imply that it doesn't matter which symbol it is - giving it a footprint makes it wonky.

As for resetting the link between components and footprints, I'm thinking that that's what AEREBUILDDB does.

There's another trick, I've never had to try it myself: Search your computer for <project name>.mdb - this is the project's 'scratch database'. If you delete it, and then start ACADE, it will read all the drawings in the project and rebuild that database from zero. However I'm thinking AEREBUILDDB does much the same thing, so it may do nothing.

Do you notice issues on multiple projects or just the one?

If its just the one, see if you have any tasks. (it will be a checkmark over a list - in the project browser at the top)

When you work with multiple people the way the system handles it, is it holds the changes in a pending task. 

While this works well with 2 people, when you add the 3 person in if the tasks from the other 2 have not been resolved they prevent you from making changes. 

This may not be the case here but I would check that just to be sure.

The other thing I have seen on networked drives that causes a similar issue is permissions, make sure your user account has the same permissions on the folders as the other users. 

Note: Its possible an update on your server locked you out.

Well, the problem affects all the projects I open and only the components who have a footprint in the active project. My colleagues have no issues with opening, editing and saving these drawings (nobody has any tasks remaining). I've copied projects from the network drives to my local drive, to check is there's a security permission issue but it's the same.

Since there's nothing more I could test I uninstalled all Autodesk programs and then re-installed ACE2017.

Now after a new install the problem is still present which makes me believe it's rather an issue with my Win 7 Pro machine than ACE 2017.

I also get this request which was probably disabled on the previous install. I tried both options but the result is the same, the manufacturer/catalogue value doesn't change.

If it turn on AEONLISPDEBUG this is the command line dialog when I edit and delete the manufacturer/catalogue value and click OK.

I don't understand LISP very well so maybe someone here can look at it and give me some clues. At this point I really don't know how to proceed next.

Hi Val.M

As Jim Suggested try deleting the Scratch database.

it will be in:

C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD Electrical 2017\R21.0\enu\Support\User

C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD Electrical 2018\R22.0\enu\Support\User

Look for the name of the project followed by .mdb

After that try editing it again.

The unknown function "VLAX-ENAME->VLA-OBJECT" looks suspicious at the end of your debug log listing. Maybe try this... type (vl-load-com) [Enter] at the Command: prompt and try again. Let's see if this will get you past that missing function error msg.

I'm using AE2017, I'm having the same issue as described above. 

1. I turned off AutoCAD Electric.
   1. I deleted C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD Electrical 2018\R22.0\enu\Support\User\name.mdb.   
   2. Restarted AE2017.
   3. This did not work.
2. I've cycled my computer.   this did not work.
3. this occurs on a few components but not all on the same page.
4. selecting About AutoCAD Electric gives an error;
5. I had a co-worker make the same change and it worked for him.

what's going on?

when my co-worker did the change, the PIN list update pop-up screen shows.   When I do it, the pop-up screen doesn't occur.  it just returns to the original catalog part number.
