LAYFRZ XREF LAYERS

I used to be able to use layfrz to freeze layers in an xref. This is not working now. I have tried setting the layfrz settings to entity but it doesn't help.

Is there another variable that will allow me to use layfrz to freeze an xref layer by clicking on it? I don't know what could have changed.

When I try to freeze a layer with layfrz it freezes layer 0 which is not even the layer the xref or the item I am trying to freeze is on.

Are you selecting something in the xref that is nested itself, and/or maybe an object such as a Civil 3D or Arch object?

Have you tested this with a simple xref with lines, arcs, text, etc.?

Hi @DParkRMAK,

Did @rkmcswain's post help you determine where the problem lies?

If not, could you zip up and attach a set of files where the issue is happening, so that we can analyze them and try to help?

Hi @DParkRMAK,

Did you need any more help with this?

Another thing you may want to check is the LAYFRZ selection setting. Is it set to Block, Entity, or None?

This was just a line in an xref. There was something in that drawing that that was not working properly. I am not having the same problems today.

I am running into this problem again. The XREF is from Civil 3D. Some symbols and path lines were blocked but I exploded the block hoping I could freeze the various symbol layers. The symbols are on different layers. When I reload the Xref after saving and I try to freeze a layer using layfrz in my layout viewport it freezes layer 0 in the current drawing. I don't get how this happens.  The only thing on layer 0 is the linework in the blocks in the Xref.

I just tried freezing the symbols in the xref and it tries to freeze layer 0. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change?  Is this normal for Civil 3D?

I am still having problems with this. I don't know what has changed in my Autocad settings but freezing xref layers is not working at all now.

This is a different DWG than my start topic on this. I have an x-ref border. I want to freeze a layer in the border. I always have simply used the layfrz ribbon command icon and the layer freezes within the xref. This no longer does this. What happens now is that layer 0 gets frozen in the main drawing.

I have tried all the options available in the settings under layfrz and nothing changes. I have tried setting visretain. It was set to 1 so I tried 0. Nothing changes.

What is going on?

No, Civil 3D objects do not work with LAYFRZ. (Generally speaking) - because they are like blocks in the sense that there is an OBJECT layer, and there are layers that are embedded via the styles.

If you want to freeze an alignment layer for example, there could be half dozen or more layers at play here depending on how the styles are defined and how your [Block/Entity/None] setting of LAYFRZ is configured.

Re Post 7... Are you paying attention to your [Block/Entity/None] setting of LAYFRZ ? Is the entity in the xref on layer 0?

Thanks for the info about Civil 3D. I suspected as much but have no experience with it other than problems like this.

I see how some things are grouped together but plain line work gives me the same issue. I have to freeze stuff from the layer manager and that is a pain with so many layers in the xrefs. I have experimented with the block, entity settings but did not see any difference in the behavior. I have been really busy and have not had time to experiment but I want to explore this further because this has been a major thorn in my side with survey backgrounds with hundreds of layers all with nonsensical names.

This is frustrating. Layers in my border are doing the same thing. I can only freeze them through layer manager and the layer names are not searchable. Is there a reg app or something I can purge? This is just lines and text!

Hi @DParkRMAK,

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue again. Could you please post a sample file where it's occurring, so that we can analyze the file and determine what might be causing the problem?
