Exporting 3d Solids or Mass Elements to ifc

I have a model made up of individual mass elements representing steel sections and plates and I need to send this to a fabricator who uses Tekla. I can export to ifc successfully, it seems at first, but the fabricator cannot import the ifc into Tekla. As I understand it, the resulting file is something similar to a block i.e. he cannot select individual members. He doesn't know AutoCAD and I don't know Tekla so we're at a standstill.

 

My question is, is there a guide to exporting to ifc that may explain where I am going wrong? As I said it's a model containing mass elements which have been created from 3D solids. Are the mass elements the problem? I'm afraid it's a bit above my current knowledge level therefore hoping someone here might have a few pointers. File attached if it's of any use.

Ive tested the export and opened the IFC in Tekla BIMSight and all looks correct so i would expect they are the same when imported into full Tekla.

The IFC export should be ok with your 3D Solids and Mass elements so im not sure what the issue could be.

The Tekla man was saying that, typically, when he receives a model exported from AutoCAD the sections have a size noted against them in the properties. He got around it by drawing over each section and detail in the end.

 

I'm not sure if setting up property sets can attach this information to each mass element but I think this is only possible for structural members. The issue with structural members is you cannot notch, only trim through infinite planes which in this case is of no use.

 

Looks like a steel package is needed..

I can't help your IFC export problem, and I didn't see where you mentioned what version of ACA you were using, but the limitation of notching structural members went away when they added the ability to add interference conditions.  I don't remember when this was done but it's been a number of years.
