AutoCAD Architecture 2008

Hi All, I'm Bob

I am running AutoCAD Architecture 2008 in XP on a Dell Precision 390.

I know, dinosaur, but I'm an old dog without new tricks.

The program was working great until I shut it down on 8-15-16 for a 4 day vacation.

On 8-20-16 program started up as usual but when I clicked the open file command

the program froze and then says not responding. Control Alt delete is only way to shut down.

Same for the File save as command. I'm using current drawings created within the past month.

I can open a drawing and work on it by going to my start menu and clicking my current clients and opening that drawing.

Cannot file save as but can x out and will ask me if I want to save.

My filedia is set at 1. My cmddia also set at 1. Still freezes.

Uninstalled program and reinstalled using the original disk. Same problem.

Have googled this problem with many results but for me no solutions.

I have heard about Windows updates might be a problem. Same with Dropbox. Am not running Spotify.

Any thoughts would be greatly welcomed. Thank you, Bob

Sorry to hear of your problem.  In your Google search, did you come across this:  http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-2010-2011-2012/file-browsing-dialog-box-cause-program-to-freez...?  In particular, checking for letter drives that are no longer valid.  Any chance you were working off of a flash drive prior to your vacation - or, perhaps, saved directly to a flash drive - and that flash drive is not currently in place on your computer?  AutoCAD could be hanging, trying to find that missing drive.

Hi David,

Thank you for getting a response to me.
No on the flash drives.
I do sometimes save files to "My Passport" so that I can keep records or
download to another computer.
What is a letter drive?

I see the thread about "project files in Options / Files / Project Files
Search Path after installing AutoCAD"

I just uninstalled and then reinstalled. Same problem.

Should I uninstall then reboot the computer and then reinstall?

I do have another computer ready to go with a Virtual machine and the same
AutoCad 2008.

Thank you,

Bob Lenahan

P.S. I know that I should have updated years ago but I self taught myself
this program
and really did not want to go through that again.

A letter drive is when a particular location is assigned a letter designation in Windows, such as C: (typically your hard drive) or X:.  You may not be connected to a network where one or more network shares are assigned a letter designation, but a flash drive or an external hard drive are usually assigned a drive letter as well.  I would expect that a full uninstallation (including deletion of all registry entries for ACA 2008) and reinstallation would remove any "memory" of previously connected drives in AutoCAD.

Rebooting after uninstalling, prior to reinstalling, is usually a good idea, but I do not know if that would make any difference to the problem you are experiencing.  Nothing else occurs to me at the moment.

Bob,

I didn't read all the other replies thoroughly,  but....

Have you tried a windows restore from a precious restore point ?

Same Here.
My last resort is going through the computer and deleting old Norton files.
I've turned off my spyware and am now reinstalling.
Hope it works.

Hello All,

It worked!

Reinstalled AutoCAD Architecture 2008. It runs.

No problems.

Shutting down the spyware hopefully helped.

AutoCAD booted up telling me that additional features were involved.

Thank you all!

Same problem with the open command and then freezing. Same with Save as.

Oh well, I WILL find a solution!

Found a solution!!  same **** happened to me last week!

Go into your windows taskbar start menu (lower left).  All Programs>Autodesk>Autocad Architecture 2008.  Hover your mouse over the "AutoCAD Architecture 2008" icon like you are about to launch the program.   Right click and select "Troubleshoot Compatibility".  You will run through some prompts and select to run the software with the Windows XP service pack.

Best,

Thank you Damien.

I tried as directed. Windows XP service Pack was not part of the option on
this computer.
Ran the program anyway with no avail.
Will continue to try for solutions.
Thank you again.

Bob

Accepted solution

Good evening AutoCAD people,

After searching through hundreds of posts and googling numerous

subjects on AutoCAD on the internet I finally tried uninstalling DROPBOX.

It has been noted on these forums by a few people to try this solution.

I uninstalled Dropbox and yes my AutoCAD Architecture 2008 works.

Try this method first. If you still need Dropbox you can access through the internet.

I haven't tried to download into it yet but that is the least of my problems.

I thought about my printers/plotters and the drivers involved but that was

my last resort. Last time I had a problem with an HP printer I was here all night

with a person on the phone from Latin America.

SO... Try the Dropbox uninstall.

I cannot remember who suggested that but KUDOS to you!

Happy drafting and designing!

Bob Lenahan

@statestreetarchitect:  The latest build of Dropbox (8.4.21) resolved the similar issue I was having with Revit 2014.  Perhaps it will resolve the issue in AutoCAD as well.  (I did not experience the issue in AutoCAD, so I cannot be certain.)

Hi David,

Thank you for the info.

I can still look through my Dropbox files by Googling and then Signing in.

I don't know if I can still download into it.

I have another computer available that I have Dropbox on and can

still access. I can use "My Passport" and hopefully transfer that way.

I dare not try to install Dropbox on this computer.

Thank you again.
