AECSelectSimilar / Right Click Select Similar not working as expected, new issue

I've never encountered this before.  Tried everything I can find online and nothing mimics the issue I have and fixes it.

Pickadd: 2

Pickfirst: 1

qaflags: 0

Right Click Customization is on

When I select an object (it highlights in blue w/grips) then I right click and choose "select similar" and instead of selecting all similar objects (as it's always done) it now deselects the object I previously selected, my crosshairs turn into a pickbox, and the command AECSelectSimilar shows up in command line and asks me to use the pickbox (square) and says select objects.

When I select an object it is highlighted in blue (no grips) after you select the object you are just left sitting there doing nothing with no direction forward.

Typing in the selectsimilar command produces the same effect, nothing.

This is cumbersome, time consuming and frustrating, to say the least.  Help?!

Only thing that happened before this started .. I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 2 weeks ago, and this just started this week.  It worked fine (as it always has) the week previous.

I have rebooted several times, nothing helps.  It does this in all drawings.

  1. What version are you using?
  2. Are you using Project Navigator or manually xreffing?
  3. Are any objects that you are selecting on a locked layer?
  4. Does this problem only occur on that object (which appears to be an xref) or does it also happen when selecting an individual ACAD object or AEC object such as a door?

  • What version are you using? 2016
  • Are you using Project Navigator or manually xreffing? Neither, this is just a plain drawing with only a few layers (honestly, I don't know what Project Navigator is .. never heard that term before.  I started with Autocad 2008 and have just kept upgrading and I know there have been a lot of bells and whistles added over the years, I just don't utilize many them because I don't really need them for what I am doing)
  • Are any objects that you are selecting on a locked layer? negative, no locked layers
  • Does this problem only occur on that object (which appears to be an xref) or does it also happen when selecting an individual ACAD object or AEC object such as a door? It happens no matter what I select.  I can open a fresh drawing, draw 10 lines, select one and this problem occurs.

I don't think my last graphic recorded correctly (new converter I had to use) maybe this will work right lol

Basically what I have to do to select multiples is

select object

right click, choose select similar from menu

the pick box appears, then I touch an object (basically this cancels out selecting it previously)

then hit enter

then click the object again and it will then select all that are similar .. so annoying!

Did you just upgrade to Win10? Or just install ACA2016?
What does ABOUT command list as your 2016 version exactly?

Dumb question: have you restarted your computer yet?

Yes, I just upgraded to Win10 from Win7 2 weeks ago after Windows forced a Windows Defender update and my computer wouldn't stay connected to theinternet after a certain time.

1 week ago this issue started.  I use select similar ALL the time.  Never happened before last week.

Not sure if this will make a difference, but you do not have the latest AutoCAD update (2016.0.11, September 27, 2018) installed.

I just tried to install that update and it will not allow me to.  It says "This update could not be installed because it is not designed for the version of AutoCAD 2016 that is installed on your computer."

The AutoCAD 2016.0.11 Update release notes claim it contains all of the previously released updates, which suggests it should install on any version of AutoCAD 2016 (or vertical product).

The AutoCAD 2016.0.10 Update is still available under Product Updates on my Autodesk Account.  Try installing that first, then the AutoCAD 2016.0.11 Update.

I did .. it will not do it.  I downloaded every version I could find and get the same error message for each try.

OK so this is fun .. For whatever reason AutoCAD Architecture started crashing (a Windows crash not an Autodesk crash) yesterday every time I would try to open more than 1 drawing at a time (which I need to do almost every time I start a project).  So we upgraded to 2021 (since I was already have this issue with the Select Similar, and quite frankly was tired of dealing with it) .. IT'S STILL DOING IT .. wtf .. I'm like are you KIDDING me?!?!?!

a Windows crash usually means a system level issue is being triggered: installer newer more demanding software is never a solution.

What error messages are you getting? Have you engaged your IT folks to dig a bit deeper in your the OS to find out what the crash trigger was?

The IT person is who installed the most recent version. He tried to repair 2016 and it wouldn’t go thru, so he upgraded to the most recent version. Frankly I wish he wouldn’t have. Our contract is up for renewal but hasn’t been purchased yet so now I’m working on a trial version (because our contract was for up to 2019 🙄🙈).

I really think a lot of this is a conflict with my graphics card. It keeps sending error messages as well (driver conflicts) ever since installing W10. The error message I got with the BOD references AMD which is the brand of graphics card, but I’m not IT so My opinion there is invalid 😂

I'm having the same issue with 2021. It doesnt matter what type of object I select, I can't select an object then use the right-click select similar command.

@bwieserMDUD6 What is the commandline error or alert or comment? There is always something there.

OR... did you lose track of your PICKFIRST and PICKADD variables settings by chance? HELP lists the defaults.

Had same problem.

It was working at first, but after some command I have tried to select similar again, but it did not worked as expected.

My guess is some setting got lost in last command. But PICKFIRST and PICKADD variables settings did not fixed problem.

Restarting AutoCAD fix problem.

So, if someone have same problem, try to check variables first. If they don't help, restart AutoCAD.

For me restarting AutoCAD helps often.

I just experienced this issue and was able to solve it. Run the SELECTSIMILAR command and then use the drop down to select settings. Make sure all of those boxes are clicked (for some reason I only had one clicked). Click OK. Close out of autocad and relaunch.
