Mblur and Motion vector support for Toon Shader

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi, I have a question related to arnold's toon shader. Will there be support in the future for motion blur and motion vector aov for toon lines in the arnold toon shader for maya?

Currently we are leaning towards motion blur in post as there is no support for it in arnold's toon shader.

If there are any alternatives then please share.

Thanks.

There might be some additional support for motion blur in the toon shader in the future. But note that there are many ways to stylize motion, so we would need to come up with a way to parameterize them or a way to provide tools for users to generate the look they need.

For instance, regarding motion vectors for contour lines: for geometry you have a clear motion vector, but there is really not a single solution for the motion of a contour line.

There are tools like optical flow that will generate the most natural 2d motion vector based purely on the rendered images. Nuke has some retiming tools that use optical flow that might be worth exploring.

Or you could use a regular motion vector from Arnold, dilate the data to cover the full contour lines.

Both those methods can be used to blur the moving lines.

Another option is to just ghost previous contour lines to generate staggered contour lines from previous frames, or inter frames.

But for the time being there's no built-in support in Arnold.
