Making a Planet Atmosphere

Im trying to make a Planet and render it with Arnold

atmpsphere.jpg

I added a Sphere around the planet, added an Arnold Volume shader, and in Arnold properties in the mesh I activated VOLUME and padding 0.1

even when lowering the density to 0.001, the border of the atmosphere is too sharp. Any suggestions ?

There is a tutorial with scene file and textures here. Maybe adding a ramp to the standard_volume shader would help.

Hello lee, thanks for the tutorial, I followed it but still im getting a sharp edge in the atmosphere.

And changing emission_mode to density, makes my atmosphere show full power in the shadow area of the planet

Try  ramp_rgb -> atan -> standard_volume.transparent or facing_ratio -> atan  -> standard_volume.transparent.

I tried it with the facing ratio + a ramp but still getting the edges too sharp and aint looking good.

But I followed the Vray Tutorial and managed to make it work with Arnold

I replaced the Falloff-Light/Shadow with a Toon Material, used a ramp for the Base Tonemap, and worked perfectly

This is giving me the result im looking for, Still I want to learn how to use the Volume Shaders right
