On completion of an animation, the white deck of my ship object flickers and flashes when playing the AVI file.

Can you post some images? Does it use the Physical Sky?

I'll sort images now. No, not Physical Sky. One Arnold Point light.

It might be difficult to see but from left to right the grey shadow on the deck should not be there. The grey shadow clears (centre image) as should be, and then back to displaying the extra grey shadow. In the animation this displays as 'flashing' on & off.

Do you know if the logarithmic exposure control is the best for a walkthrough of the ships deck & fly by of the complete ship?

I use the physical camera exposure control. The light on deck is a bit to bright. Also the light intensity varies between frames. Try rendering frames and merging the together, instead of directly to a compression. There is something wrong with the reflection on the deck, overly bright light, material, ... Try uploading a sample scene max 2018 and I will have a look at it. 😉

Could it be coincidental geometry?

Thank you Michiel,

Thank you for getting in touch.

I think I've sorted it. The problem seems to be the deck's geometry. The whole ship is a linked AutoCAD model. After deleting the deck (about 8 different surfaces) and replacing it, a test render has worked fine.

Just for information:

With the original geometry I rendered frame No.350 as a still image, this showed the deck as white.

When I moved to frame No. 353 the deck showed the large grey shadow.

Changing any settings made frames 350 & 353 react in the opposite way so, frame 350 showed the grey shadow & frame 353 shows a completely white deck. The changes I made were everything from a different camera/exposure control to changing any levels available in the material and main light etc.

Ultimately replacing the geometry had to be the only thing left.

I've turned down the lights as you suggested & I'll try the physical camera exposure control as soon as I can.

Thanks you again for your efforts.

Dave
