How can I get 4 patches G3 aligned? (link with file for download)

Hi everyone,

 

I have a general question about something I cant figure out how to do in Alias: How do you get G3 continuity along 4 patches with each of the patches having two edges to other adjacent patches?

 

When i use the Align tool set up for G3 alignment and I align one edge after the other then I might get 3 of the 4 edges aligned but when I do last edge algment it again destroys one of the prior aligments.

 

It seems like the patches and cvs arent "pointing" in the exact right direction to get the aligment right.


The problem also is that there seems to be no tool in Alias with which you can get G3 continuity for 2 edges at the same time. With the align tool you can only select one edge for G3 alignment and with the square and rail tool you can select more than one edge but they only go for G2 alignment.

 

So what do I have to do to get a G3 continuity between them?

Your screenshot doesn't show 4 surface patches. The link to your file might lead to a virus injection site, so I will not open it. Please attach your Alias .wire file in the attachment field you find under each text box where you type your question.

Unforuntatly its not allowed to attach .wire files on this forum. I dont understand why, thats why i postet a link for download.

So I would be glad if you could still have a look (Its not a virus ;))

You sure can. Just compress the .wire file into a .zip file and attach as indicated below the message text box, like the example I'm attaching here.

 

Even if you assure users that there is no virus, the download site where it's hosted may add one. It's very unsafe and I will not open it.

 

So, just make a .zip file, and you're good to go.

The four surfaces are of poor quality, see princ. min. curvature screenshot attached. Lots of torsion in the boundaries also, see curvature combs. The lower two surfaces can be built as one surface. The upper two maybe also as an extension of the lower, bent backwards, then trimmed, but without knowing anything about all the surrounding surfaces or the design intent, hard to say.

Hi Systembolaget,

 

thanks for you help so far... attached you can find another file with a set of surfaces where I'm encountering the same problem - difficulty getting G3 alignment for multiple adjacent patches (especially if there are two or three adjacent surfaces at a surface. Im trying to rebuild a mesh, which is part of the file aswell so you know what I'm aiming for in the design intent. I doesnt matter so much how the surrounding surfaces look, just getting these surfaces g3 would be great.

Any advice?

Don't piece together little surfaces like a quilt. Find key curves and sections and build simple clean surfaces. Maybe do some surfacing tutorials first before attempting to reverse engineer a product (car?) from scanned meshes.
