Defining new Symmetry Plane

I'm using Layers>Symmetry>Set Plane and adjusting the manipulator to set a new principal plane for symmetry. However I'm not confident it's set exactly at the new plane. Is there a way to specify an exact 90 degree rotation, or any specific angle for that matter?

Thanks,

James

Ok, I see that I can click one of the small squares on the manipulator to choose a principal plane.

Hi Coutellier,

It's glad that you have found the plane can be adjusted thorugh the manipulator's small square. After you clicked that small square, you are able to rotate the plane in 90 degree straight.

You can also adjust the plane by first selecting the pick-object tool, pick your plane, then navigate to the information window to change and rotate your plane.

As a follow-up: Is there a way to force a layer's symmetry plane to be based on a construction plane?

Yes, it is possible. Please refer to the below figure:

I had set up a layer's symmetry plane to be based on the construction plane where the half sphere, square line and circle are drawn. Just go to Layers --> Symmetry --> Set Plane, then refer to the plane that you have created.

Oh I have it now.  Just one click on the dashed edge of the construction plane immediately after selecting 'set plane'.  Thanks!

Is there a way to reset the symmetry plane after rotating it in any angle? i cant reset the symmetry to be in exact 90 degree in any axis . Is there a way to reset the symmetry plane ?

Simply click on the origin of manipulator and type 0 0 0 (in this move you will move the symmetry plane back to the global origin). Then click on one of the small sphere of the manipulator for switching in rotate mode, then click on the sphere at the origin and type 0 0 0 (in this way you will orient the simmetry plane back on the standard XYZ planes).

Hope this helps

Thank you for your input on the manipulation to revert a construction plane back to the grid. I've also had trouble with this in the past, although even with your description, I'm still having trouble getting the plane to align back to perpendicular to the grid.

Are you saying to click one of the red, blue or green spheres and then to type in 0 0 0 ? I try this and most of the time nothing happens, even when my transforms are set to Absolute. Sometimes something does happen, but it doesn't align to grid as you say it should.

If I enter 0, 0, 0 in the information window, that works, but the manipulator remains crooked. I have to exit the tool, and when I query edit to bring the manipulator up again it is straight.

Thank you for helping us figure out how these are supposed to work!

Thanks that was very helpful
