One thing i do in order to avoid this is use the Xref feature of Autocad. I can make a centralized model file that is the basis of the model with Grids, Footings,Foundations & walls. I save that as the"Central Model" and from there i copy a specific area or "Phase" into a new project to model with. This way, i can create certain areas with all of the elevations, and modeled components and move onto the next area with ease.

This will speed up your model performance and decrease your file size eliminating this issue. Just be sure to number by phase

Dear kirk,
I am not understand your response properly.are you saying about multiuser process?
If not please describe mhe briefly .this can really help me.

I want to hearing back from you.

It's similar to the multi user process, but you use autocad based functions(xrefs) instead of the Advance Steel Functions.

  1. Create the basis model with grids, footings & foundations and save that model as its own file.
  2. open a new advance steel drawing and save that as"Phase One or Level One" or something else you'd perfer.
  3. Type in XREF in the Autocad Command Prompt & open the Basis model you created in step one and begin modeling  the area or level you need to do first. create the connections and number the object with "Phase Numbering" for shop drawing/record keeping reasons.
  4. Save the phase model and unload the XREF file from the drawing to prevent overlap.
  5. Open the Basis Model and XREF in the Phase's you've completed
  6. repeat steps one through five until the model is finished!

The reasoning behind this workflow is that it is just the same as multi user mode, it's just faster and for one user. you can use the basis model for origin points and object placement and get the model done a lot faster because the cpu isnt trying to process such a large model. I use it all the time with large models and i can keep my file size down to maybe 2-3 megabytes maximum.

Hey Kirk ,
When I am trying your suggestion then I face some practical issue with your workflow .
1)assume I have three story building and as you Know there are so many connection between floor. So how can I connect my floors with your xref.
2)how can I use xref as reference For my another part of building
3)as I understand u want to say That for a big model I will have to create so many local model.I believe this is not great idea to share and going to implementation in my company.
4)I don't know how to murge my number of models in one master model .
5)I happy to know that this much faster.

I want to hearing back from you with your point of views.

THANK YOU

Speed of advance steel related to following issues

1-MULTIUSER PROCESS-VERY SLOW WITH SO MANY ERRORS
2-SIZE OF MODEL
3-VERY LESS CONNECTION BASED ON US MARKET .ITS CONSUME LOTS OF OUR TIME.
AND SO MANY OTHER POINTS

Hi,

Kirk's proposal using XREF technology is obviously a technic that is used succesfully by many of our customers. However it also depends on the project type and might not be the perfect solution for any project.

Performance was one of the key areas that we improved for 2016 version and where we always keep an eye on together with the AutoCAD team. So also with 2017 version you may see some improvements. Of course it also depends on the device that is used.

One nice tool that was introduced with 2016 version to help in the daily use is the work area. Most times customers don't work at the same time in area grid A-1 and N-20. By using the work area, customers can minimize the visible area and pan/zoom/orbit are way faster.

best regards

Udo
