Stair Railing Overhang and other railing stuff

Using Advance Steel

I am wondering if anyone out there has experience with these custom railings. See attached screen capture. I have also included the AS model if that helps. On the attached screen capture, you can see the railing system that I am trying to recreate.

Questions:

  1. I don't see any options in the railing configuration dialog boxes that allows you to change the length of the stair railing overhang. Is this a system controlled default? Can this be changed?
  2. I don't believe there is any way to recreate the grab rail as shown in the diagram, so does anyone have any suggestions for that?
  3. I also can't seam to get that top rail to end at the post. It's sticking out a few inches.

Any help is appreciated. Thank!

I think I solved two of my issues (2 & 3) but the most important one (1) is a must fix in order to use Advance Steel. I would appreciate any input on how to get the railing overhang to be less than what the default is making it. It appears to be set at 1'-2" from the post. See attached.

Fixes:

(2) I created a polyline shape and applied the Beam, Polyline command to create the HSS1.66 grab rail.

(3) This I used Features - Cut at object.

Hi,

No 2 will be  a manual task as you have done but 1 and 3 are simple.

1) The Handrail > End of Handrail should be set to Loop. Simply adjust the value in line "2. Length" as desired. A length of zero puts the vertical portion above the start point. Adjust the distance form start to first post if you want to get it closer to the post than that.

3) On the Posts > Set out of posts page simply adjsut the "2. distance end to last post" as desired e..g half your post width.

Of course you can switch the start and end over if needed the same options apply at both ends.

Maybe I am mistaken, but I don't see a height adjustment option with the "Loop"  Connection type. The loop option aligns the bottom portion of the loop with the bottom handrail (no vertical adjustment)? The closest option seems to be the Loop return connection, but you can't eliminate a horizontal piece of railing...Ugh

Hi,

You didn't ask about the height of the loop - your picture asks about the length of the loop.

If you use the Railing end set to Loop instead of return the vertical portion is always over the railing start / end point. You can adjust the height of this / then adjust the distances from start / end points to first / last posts as desired. The start and end points show in the model as small white wireframe balls. If they are not in the right place you can move these along using the grip in the centre of them. Or you can use the Move start / end base point fields on the set out of posts page.

AS 2019

This issue has not been resolved with a solution, so any help / solution would be appreciated.  I have attached the Advance Steel File and a PDF with the part of the railing in question clouded. I was hoping my customer would have accepted the design as is, but they want the extension of the handrail moved back so that the grab rail extends out further. I have not found the correct procedure in making this happen, and I am afraid I am going to have to redraw the entire job in basic 2D AutoCAD to get it accepted and fabricated.

Accepted solution

I changed the numbers around a lot, but now I've looked at it properly this is easier.

If you take 6" off the move start base point you need to change the post offsets and max distance between posts.

So take 6" off the distance start to first post.

You can end up tying yourself up in knots if you change lots of numbers with things moving all over the place.
