Scripting in Labels and Symbols

Can someone please shed some light on me? In certain situations I would like to label assemblies in cut views. Commonly enough the main member is not visible but another part of the assy is. In this example the top rail of the railing post that's showing is out of view. When I want to label what assembly it is, I cannot seem to construct a method to display the main part mark without manually typing it in. How does the function thing work? How can I use this to determine the main assy mark for the attached part in view?

I think this is nothing which could be done with scripts, because the information is there or not. But I think this is only a default, I'm not in the office but I think it's called something like 'allow singlepart to label with their mainpart number'
