Object coordinate axis

Hello, is there a way to see one, or all, objects coordinate system. I have 4 columns who I rotated after placing with the positioning dialog. All of them have the same coordinate axis when marked.

My goal is to have all columns y axis towards center of building. Then maby I can use same baseplate. Not have to do a right or left version. I want it to be easy to see how the column is rotated.

Thanks, and take care.

Hi,

Try using the UCS > Define Coordinate System command on the palette. Then pick an object and it will show a symbol (at one end  - the start - of a beam). Pick that symbol and your UCS will be changed to match the internal UCS of the object. You can only use this on one object at a time.

@AleckGiles  we use that tool alot but cannot find any info that defines the colors of the object ucs. we just click it and then rotate the UCS to suit. Is there a better practice?

Hi @muleman1 ,

for the ucs colors, check the settings via command: UCSICON

In OPTIONS / Display / Colors you have the possibility to set the color for each axis of crosshairs.

The symbol that is displayed using this command is like a marker / indicator, the best way to read it or understand it is that the longest coordinate axis shown is the Z axis of the object. So this shows the internal rotation of the beam element.

Also this symbol will appear at the origin end of the profile, this is the first point you draw the element from, sometimes referred to as end 1, end2 is the finish end of the profile.

If you use macros like the portal frame, the Z axis of columns is outwards and at the bottom of the column, this is so that when the column is detailed is comes out correct on drawings to the settings within the management tools and drawing systems.
The same is true for numbering, the column orientation can be set via MT defaults to consider its rotation for numbering values, if so required.

Hello,

Thanks to you all for reading and answering. I will take all of it with me in my daily work.

The real question might be, can I have it as simple as in Robot? One click to object USC?

To set UCS, perfect, but there is also other ways.

I will mark this as accepted, I guess I would been told the way by now if it existed. But can it be for the future=)?

Take care you all!

Hi,

there is a command ‘rotate member to ucs’,  you set the ucs to required orientation and the section can be rotated to align with that ucs.

the command button is on the advance steel tools palette, scroll down and you will see the command in the lower right of the palette.
