Model View Not Clipping Xref

This is probably an AutoCAD failure, but I am using Advance Steel and would hope there may be a solution. I am developing a Canopy model in front of the main model which I have attached as an Xref. After creating a Model View that has a clipping boundary, the boundary does not recognize the xref. Is there a function in AS that will clip xref's? I noticed this true for all generated Model views. I would consider this a complete failure from Autodesk if there isn't a solution.

There's only the option: show or not show the xref, this could not be clipped. Maybe it's better to insert the xref as special part and the set the behavior to not use for numbering, then it will be clipped.

The problem of clipping xref is known to Autodesk and I think this a very difficult issue. Because the xref is in the model.dwg and the details are in extra created dwgs, so this is very hard to set, but this is only my opinion.

Maybe you could also do the following:

Not show the xref in the detail drawing and then attach the xref as new in the detail drawing directly, so you could clip the xref or use viewport if you attach the xref in the model area.

In the main model, assuming it is an Advance steel model, create a model view around the entrance area, to show the main. Building and extending out to cover the canopy.

activate the model views in the main model and save and close the main model.

in the canopy model, reload or update the xref of the main structure, it should prompt for this.

the main model will only show the active model view.

from this you should be able to create the view with the main model clipped and the canopy.

note you can also open the xref and edit it and close it from the combined canopy model.

Hey John,

I was just reviewing this issue again and was reading your idea (which is a good one that works)...but, is it true to say that this will only work with one clipped view at a time? If I have multiple model views in the main model, I would have to keep going in and out of the referenced model and changing the clipped area when I wanted to see the correct model view in the main model.
