How to make a 3D drawing of a model view.

Dear all,

How can I make a 3D drawing of just a selected model view in Advance steel?

Attached a view of the complete model and a view of the first level. I want to make a 3D drawing of just the first level view.

Thanks in advance for the support 🙂

Hi @fivol

You can't currently run cameras / model views with selected items.

You need to isolate the objects then set your UCS to the view, then select the items , then you need to run a manual drawing style which runs on selected parts

The only downside to this, if you add anything extra and you want them to show on the 3D view then you need to do the whole process again

Hi,

so this type of limited 3D view that restricts in the Z axis of the view, is not as easy as it should be in AS.

typically I would say use a camera, but currently you cannot select elements to shown in a camera view.

at present the closest you will get is to use a drawing style, a 3D one with labels, make sure it has ‘selection set’ set under the object selection part of the style.  Then use that style to create the drawing manually from the model.

To do this you will need to set a couple of things in the model:

the UCS, you should rotate the model ( or use standard iso view setting) to the 3D orientation you require, use the ‘view ucs’ tool on ucs palette.
also you can create a selection set, by using the selection marking tool, from the selection palette,  you can select a group of objects and and natking( highlights them in red) , then use select marked objects.

with the objects selected, you then run the drawing from the style, providing it is set to selection set , it will then only produce drawing of those objects.

a drawback to note is that you cannot add to the selection of that drawing or change it, if you alter the model, new elements will not appear, you have to run a new view and add it to the same drawing, afterwards deleting the original.

as I said wish it was an easier workflow, but it is possible.

Thanks for your reply,

I tried your workflow and attached a print screen of the result. It is close but it still shows the complete selected parts and not just the section in the view window.

Hi,

An alternative workflow is as follows:-

  • Use a camera on a 3D UCS.
  • Then set the camera limits as close as possible to the objects you want to see in the view.
  • Generate the drawing.
  • Then in the drawing delete the individual objects that you don't want to see in the view.
  • Update the view.
  • Repeat deleting and updating until no more unwanted objects are shown in the view.

This is laborious but it will update properly if any new objects are created in the range of the camera view. Also, you can access the drawing on the right click menu from a part in the model, like any other camera view.

I created model view and then GA drawing from it. I hide some elements in model but then drawing shows them anyway. So its not possible to hide them for drawing, except deleting them in detail? I have lot of elements to delete and it long process, update-delete-update....

Hi @Kvothe_23

If you are using Advance Steel 2022 or 2023 there is new functionality in cameras which allows you to select objects before running the camera

With Advance Steel 2023 you can also link the selected objects to a search
