Graphics card vs RAM

I would like to speed up Advance Steel 2019.

My current setup is as follows.

Nvidia Quadro K2000 (2GB)

16GB RAM.

Windows 10 Pro

Most of my modelling is done with the 2d wireframe visual style

Current project has 16,000+ parts

What would be more beneficial?

More RAM on the motherboard

or

A Graphics more powerful graphics card e.g. Quadro P2000 (4GB)

What speed increase would I expect to get from each option?

Thanks in advance.

A few extra bucks spent for custom built and extensively tested workstation by top company located in Texas would be washed away by the time wasted to make the things work, final result would be fast and stable workstation, not causing headache. Mine has already paid off just after few months of use, compared to my previous Xeon, 8700K is 25-30% faster. Models fly, updating details, printing of 300-500 dwgs is much faster.

If it is made of steel, I can model it and detail it.

Hi Ilko

I'm dragging you back into this thread again, I am now just noticing you are saying the overclocked i7 is better than the 3.7 Xeon. I had ECC Ram and i7, discovered it was not compatible so just purchased the Xeon E-2176G, in your opinion will this be ok or would you have switch back the ram to non ECC and overclocked the i7.

Thank you for your time. Happy New Year

Happy New Year Adrian,

Keep the i7-8700K, overclock it, and purchase non-ECC ram, I just checked mine, it is non-ECC.

It is amazing what an overclocked processor does.

Interesting maybe I should hold of on the Xeon, I agree with money saved and time spend not worth it, but I guess when I'm learning along the way it is all good.

2d Wireframe.. There lies your problem. So, even though it's a simple view style, the number of extra lines the cpu has to render will slow things immensely! I'd suggest using conceptual instead, for it has less lines it needs to render out. Wireframe is great if you have only a few objects displayed at a time. otherwise, it's really processor intensive.

Also, AMD ryzen 5-7 series is a lot cheaper & outperforms anything intel can provide right now, in my opinion.

I'm not sure how often I told this on my trainings 😄 , therefore shortcuts and toogle switch are great to switch between these visual styles.

But maybe according to this thread, if you buy a video card and processor for a lot money, it should work... up to a very big model. But I had to learn the last years, that this is not a warranty for a good working system.

Hey @Sebastian_Eiche you just caught my attention with

shortcuts and toogle switch are great to switch between

I've been meaning to figure out how to do this with my drawing units between architectural and Decimal for years.  Sorry for hijacking 😄 If it isn't too much trouble would you mind PM'ing me a link to some content regarding this please?

This is my set-up for 2D wireframe, no any issues with larger models, including bridge work:

mmm, mine is the same but when using 2d wireframe large (300,000lbs) model is jerky, (model takes about 6 seconds to regen) a lot better in wireframe when using the GPU. So from what I have learned in the past week you overclocking is probably doing this as 2d wireframe is relying on CPU.

Starting a 5 story building this week so I guess I'll find out the hard way.

Thanks again Ilko for your time and help.
