Graphics card vs RAM

I would like to speed up Advance Steel 2019.

 

My current setup is as follows.

Nvidia Quadro K2000 (2GB) 

16GB RAM.

Windows 10 Pro

 

Most of my modelling is done with the 2d wireframe visual style

Current project has 16,000+ parts

 

What would be more beneficial?

 

More RAM on the motherboard

 

or

 

A Graphics more powerful graphics card e.g. Quadro P2000 (4GB)

 

What speed increase would I expect to get from each option?

in my opinion, the more RAM will not increase so much, but the cost of RAM is not so high, so why not adding it too=)
Videocard could be bring a little bit more, but the K2000 is not so bad, do use the correct driver from Autodesk?
The mainproblem of the speed of Advance Steel is AutoCAD =).
The problem is, that AutoCAD is using one processor and so I made the experience, that the most speed increase could be done by using a processor with high gigahertz and a SSD disk.

I have tried to do alot of research on this and I seem to find alot of contradictory info in relation to quadro cards vx gtx cards.

I know the GTX cards are not certified but it dosnt seem to be an issue.

I will be getting an SSD soon so I hope this will help

Hi,

 

You state you are using the "2D Wireframe" visual style. As far as I know this style does NOT use Graphics Card hardware acceleration. So upgrading your card is not likely to make any real difference at all to this.

 

If you check you should see there are two different Visual Styles called "2D Wireframe" and "Wireframe" the latter is the proper GPU accelerated version of Wireframe. If you compare these styles in the Visual Style Manager you will see they have totally different options and capabilities. It is worth comparing the performance of both.

 

Furthermore, it is my understanding that modern graphics cards are optimised for shading not edges. So a view with shading and no edges may perform better than a view with edges/ the "Shaded" style should be this but check the Visual Style manager as the default UK template has the edges turned on in both "Shaded" and "Shaded with Edges" rather defeating the point.  I can definitely tell a difference on my PC.

I didn’t realise the 2d wireframe visual style didn’t take advantage of the graphics cards capabilities.

I used that visual style thinking it would speed things up, I now use Wireframe and wow the difference.

Hi,

 

Further to my previous comment I have also noticed that in the default template in the UK build the Wireframe visual style has occluded edges turned off. This means the system has to do lots of slow hidden line calculations greatly reducing performance.

 

Try checking Occluded Edges Show = Yes and Color = ByEntity. That will match the 2D Wireframe appearance and give the best performance.

I agree with Aleck... Change to Wireframe mode and for shaded mode use shaded with no edges (AS2019 performs better)... I have ASUS ROG laptop with GTX 1070 and AS2019 is "flying"...

I'm using 64gb of RAM and on occasion during general placement drawing updates that process alone will peg the needle on RAM use. I couldn't think of going back to anything less. 

 

It isn't just the modeling portion of what we do that eats up the resources. The most difference I have seen throughout the years is in the processor speed. You will see a snappy difference if you run with 5ghz. Like already stated the GPU doesn't get utilized as much as you would think a 3D CAD modeling software should. I have an older gaming card in my home computer with 32gb of RAM and it works quite well.  Although it is also liquid cooled and clocked to 5ghz. Get through the process quicker. ACAD doesn't utilize but one of them lol. Actually ROFL! Wtf Autodesk?

 

With more RAM though your model can get quite large without noticing issues. With fast CPU it chugs through processes faster. I had P2000 on my last machine and it worked fine. I have P4000 now. Other software I frequent does take advantage of it better 🙂

Warning... If you do start detailing with one of these you will not be happy if you go to a new employer who does not provide you with one. My philosophy is very simple, you wouldn't take a Prius to the race track and expect to win would you? Get the fastest hardware your wallet will allow. I use the one on the right for processing point cloud data now so it doesn't slow down my new one while I'm modeling lol.   I'm proud of these babies, they made us a lot of money in less time.

The Kepler (K-series) is a little long in the tooth at this point, while you can try to keep tracking down updated drivers you'll see diminishing returns as more and more software moves to newer versions of DirectX.  I'd highly recommend getting something more modern such as the P2000 or GTX 10_0 series at this point now that the GTX-20_0 series are starting to hit the market.  More RAM might be useful but use a system monitor before doing so; if you aren't exceeding system RAM now there's not much point in getting excessive.

 

That being said... hardware isn't everything.  You can throw $10k at a box (even a Boxx) and you won't get much of an improvement if you don't optimize how you handle the data.  Keep files lean, mean, and clean, and optimized for AutoCAD (which has a few limitations on large single-file models, as previously noted).  If you need a monster computer to work with them, and a client doesn't have that kind of hardware, they won't be able to do much with what you send them.

Apexx S3, same here. 

Usually approximately 8.5-9 Gigs of RAM are utilized for medium +/- size projects. 32Gigs are more than enough, 16 will work well too.

Video card-P4000, more than enough, if no heavy duty rendering is required. K2000/2200 become outdated.

 

The overall speed of workflow with overclocked to 4.8GHz  i7 K series, liquid cooled, increased drastically compared to the 3.7GHz Xeon due to the single threaded application.

 

Boxx is the way to go, I will never go back to the popular names.

BTW-when did you manage to collect this dust, tell your boss to arrange cleaning around , it is an OSHA requirement:)

I'm the guy who tells everyone how bad it is to have their computers on the floor too. Last time I cleaned it I set a threshold on an alert for the amparage draw on the fans at the time. I really should move it up on desk lol. It's only been temporarily there for 6 years.

What is the hard drive / SSD you use? 

 

Per my experience a good SSD does huge difference-please note, even big name Z-series SSD can be slower than newer SSD, and much faster than same big name HDD.

 

I replaced a 2.5 year old HDD with SSD on an older Xeon + K2200 workstation, and Advance started to be MUCH faster and more stable. The old HDD did not indicate any errors, bad sectors etc, but it was actually slow from the first day I had it.

On another occasion I had a good video card, and another big name PC with i7, but the motherboard was not communicating well with ANY video cards, except with the integrated one. It was a massive poor Engineering error of a big company.

 

IMO the first two most important components for an everyday Advance steel use is an overclocked processor and a very good SSD.

Hi Everyone,

 

Aleck I am having a lot of performance issues with my new build.

 

I7-8700k

Samsung 970 Pro

Samsung 860 Evo

32gb ECC Memory (Samsung)

P4000 GPU

 

i'm curious about your suggestions for occluded edges in Wireframe mode, when orbiting in 3D wireframe it automatically changes to Wireframe but it will then look the same this is a useful visual I use, orbit be view model temp as wireframe. Just curious as I need to improve my performance and am hoping this will help.

Any other suggestion would be appreciated as it is frustrating that my laptop performs better, haha.

Hi,

If you set things up for best performance 2D Wireframe (no GPU acceleration) and Wireframe (with GPU) will look the same. WITH Occluded edges turned ON in Entity colour.

 

As you say, if you are set to 2D Wireframe the system will sometimes change to Wireframe during rotation. That is part of the problem. There is a delay while it passes the graphics / model data to the GPU and gets it back again and redraws the screen each time. Forget 2D Wireframe and stay in Wireframe when needed. As I understand it, removing hidden edges is an extra task after ALL edges are computed so it is a lot more work for the GPU rather than having less edges to compute.

 

The fastest display mode. and generally much easier to understand and work with, is Shaded so long as you have all edges turned OFF. (Shaded with Edges is to include edges [visible = On, Occluded = off] not this one). So if performance is an issue you should spend 90% of your time in this mode.

 

I don't really see any benefit of working in Wireframe mode with Occluded edges off. The only reason to be in wireframe instead of a shaded mode is to see through things. If you don't want to see through things then go shaded which is much easier. If you need hidden edges removed when rotating to see what you are doing then use shaded instead. Seeing through things can be useful when viewing a small area for a short time (clash check results or so you can see the back and front of a joint all at once perhaps) but really hard to follow much of the time.  I know a few long time users are used to, and prefer, Wireframe mode but new users find shaded much easier.

 

For modern graphics cards Shading = Fast, Edges = Slow, Removing hidden edges = very slow. So set your display accordingly.

You have the goods to work up a very fast workstation. If you get an ASRock motherboard and liquid cooling you could gain an additional 1GHz in speed. Not to mention a really quiet machine. 

 

Here's my specs... Same processor and GPU as you, except on boost 😛 

mysystem.JPGIf you were interested I'd be willing to share the model number of my motherboard and what my bios overclock settings are. These settings are the biggest pain when it comes to overclocking and it takes a long time to tune the perfect mixture. However, a team of highly trained individuals already did that for this workstation. 

 

I would be interested in attempting to reproduce this workstation for my personal use. I would also be willing to share the info along the way through the build. This could benefit all AS users who are in need of a hardware solution on a budget. A recipe for a blazing fast Advance Steel workstation is just what this community needs. I believe everyone should experience the same satisfaction,  I know at least one other member here does 😄

Hi Mark,

 

Thank you for joining in, much appreciated, I had not intended on overclocking my machine but going forward if I needed to to get best performance I would then maybe do it as i have been told this may be the way to go by numerous people. At the minute I have just purchased Xeon E-2176G where I was going to re sell my i7 as I discovered my ECC memory is not compatible with i7. This would I'm guessing hinder my ability to copy your setting. Maybe I'll keep the i7 too, haha. I am definitely interested in seeing more about your system.

Also I was quizzing a Graitec Application Engineer who thought it would be a great topic for an AU round table discussion, so hopefully. Or maybe I was thinking of contacting the Advance Steel IQ team and asking them to maybe have a webinar on this topic.
