Export to Navisworks ?

Anonymous
Not applicable

I am running AS 2015.1

I run 'export to Navisworks'. What I get is a 3DDWF rather than a .nwd file.

When I open this file in Navisworks, the display is sluggish. Every time I orbit or pan, I get display problems such as missing members.

The model itself is quite small, just a 2 flight staircase.

1. Does AS export to native Navisworks (nwd or nwf) ?

2. If not, how do I get a model to display ok ?

PS I've tried appending the model in Navisworks, but there are display problems.

I'm running a highly specced machine which handles huge AS files with no problem.

Hello George,

Try to use the NWCOUT command. Load this file into navisworks. See if you get better results.

My installation of AutoCAD doesn't recognise that command. Even after I installed the Navisworks exporter tools.

I also tried NWDOUT and NWFOUT just in case.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

The export from Adavnce Steel to Navisworks will only create a 3D DWF file.

There are 2 main ways to export into Navisworks are as follows:

Option 1:

Open the .dwg file direct in Navisworks

Option 2:

Export from Advance Steel using the 'Export to Navisworks' button on the Export & Import Ribbon. Alternatively you can use 3D DWF export from the application menu.

Please see my screencast showing the Advance Steel to Navisworks Freedom workflow

Thanks for the screencast Jonathan, that was helpful.

So the answers to my original questions are :

1. Advance Steel cannot export a Navisworks file (nwd, nwf or nwc), but it _can_ export to 3DDWF, which Navisworks can open.

2. ?? Export as 3DDWF and open in Navisworks. It does not display properly in Design Review, not that I care I don't use it.

When I open the dwg directly in Navisworks, or *append*, I get strange display problems, like handrail missing (red circles below). Also, the orbit is somewhat jerky. Not sure why your model orbits so smoothly.

Thanks wtheron, that worked a treat.

Something I just discovered with Navisworks is the display problems diappear when render style mode is set to 'shaded', not 'full render'.

This option is available from the viewpoint tab.

Hi Jonathan.

I find that unless I do an export (export or 3ddwf command) from within Advance Steel that the properties are not included. In other words, if I open the DWG directly in Simulate and save as NWD, the properties are stripped. However, if I do open the exported DWF from AS, then I see everything as expected. Further, the items in the selection tree don't appear to be the same either.

For example:, the selection tree on the left is a DWG exported via 3ddwf command from within Advance Steel. The one on the right is just the DWG. Note that the selection tree is different. I could also show you screenshots of the properties - they too are different.

I do have the AS 2017 Object Enabler installed.

yet no matter what I do, I can't get Navisworks (specifically roamer via the API) to construct a data rich NWD.

Do you have any suggestions? I would much rather rely solely on the Navisworks API to generate my NWDs instead of having to automate AS/ACAD to issue the export commands.

Does anyone have an idea how we can do this via Navisworks API only and retain the Advance Steel properties?

You can run a ".scr"  to "ExportToNavisworks".  This will retain the Advance Steel properties, from their you can use Navisworks Automation API to call basic functions of NW.
