Editing details through document manager

Hi all,

It seems to me that the document manager has been conceived with the view that the process is always:

1) Create a model to completion.

2) Create and edit drawings.

Unfortunately, projects (at least for us), very seldom work in this way. What I mean is that we can't afford the luxury of telling our clients to wait until the modelling is 100% complete prior to detailing. Hence, in most of the cases, we have someone editing details at the same time as the lead detailer is modelling the next section.

Hence my question:

What's the best way to manage this? We are told the detailer must have full read/write access to the model while editing drawings. Our issue is that the modeller must also be able to work on the same model while this is happening so as to get the next area ready for detailing...

Any feedback/suggestions will be most appreciated.

hi,

work in Phases, and select the selection box in front of the Phase line.

AS will give the same plate and beams in another phase also another number because you select the box.

Working in Phases is a good tip and should work in terms of managing the modelling process and numbering.

How can I get our detailer to edit the drawings in Phase 1, if I'm modelling on Phase 2 at the same time though, since we both need access to the model to do so?

Yeah, would love someone for Autodesk to provide some pointers if possible. I've discussed this issue with my Autodesk contact and he suggested Multi-User could work, but wasn't 100% on it. I was hoping for someone elese's take...

good luck aussie.

i am only using phases in bigger models but still not that big that i need a multi user mode. And i am working alone so.....
But phases are good to work with, it works ok with numbering and updating .
if you use it, it will give drawings and lists that when they are done they are done in the doc manager. No updates needed and other iiritating things. numbering is considering each phase as a different part and issue.

Was it the "mate" thing that gave me away??

Thanks for your tip. I was a bit concerned about having to keep updating drawings. Especially fittings... Still wish there was a way for Document Manager to only consider/load what is displayed in the model. This would make it very easy to handle partial issues!!

Multi user is definitely one way to look at it. You have a main 'master' model, that is the overall model and it holds the model, plus the documentation (drawings and BOM's etc).

Users create a secondary model (of their name, area number, whatever, it doesnt matter) and they 'Connect to Master Model' which brings in the master model and they 'Check Out' objects. They can edit these objects, create connections etc, and then they 'Check In' the updated items, plus the new items if they want back into the Master Model. This Master Model is then used to create the drawings.
