Driven or paametric dimensions on Advance Steel

Hello.

 

I work for a maintenance/engineering services company related to mining. So, design of steel structures  along with piping makes my bread and butter every day.

 

 

I'm also a SolidWorks long time user, CSWP/Instructor too. This bit matters because i have SW's workflow deeply ingrained in my way of doing things and working. Since structural capabilities of SW are somewhat limited (already tested its boundaries), i began to search for an alternative. So far i've been testing Advance Steel with the help of an ebook by Deepak Maini.

 

Quick question: Is this software parametric?, i'm yet to see a feature tree or driving dimensions. Seems to be that stuff should be put in place with already defined dimensions, not offering that classic flexibility we are used to from MCAD software.

HI,

 

The parametric capabilities of Advance Steel are nothing like those of a mechanical modeller like Solid works or Inventor. There is no tree of variables or whatever.

 

Our parametrics are based on the joints. Joints link to beams and follow when beams move or change keeping the beam ends meeting etc. Then the drawings are dynamically linked to the model. They are generated automatically rather than having to manually select parts and views etc. Then they have full update and revision control.

Now, what happens if i modify grid dimensions?, do columns and beams move/stretch accordingly?

Hi,

Unfortunately axes in AS are "dead" so you have to move columns separately. There is no something like "magnetic axes" as it is in Tekla Structures for example. Pity, by the way.

So does that mean that moving stuff requieres me to manually stretch/move things. I still have trouble with dimensions, not able or not knowing how to at least track where a joist is referenced to an axis, for example.

There are no parametric dimensions or sketches in AS. You build the model using plates and profiles and only connections of those parts are parametric. It cuold be a bit diificult to you use that kind of modeling if your base software is Solidworks.

@dominicis.a, AS is a little further down the capabilities spectrum (similar to how AutoCAD is less capable than Inventor or SolidWorks), but the flip side is it's easier to administer and the licenses are cheaper.  As with most alternative software it's best to consider it in it's own context rather than a "bad (insert familiar software here)".

 

Depending on your expectations and deliverables you might want to cast around and compare some other programs like the aforementioned Tekla, ProStructures (from Bentley), or possibly Revit.

Advance Steel still has an option for parametric design in 3D - the Dynamo extension. It's open source code and free. The Dynamo extension for AS is object-oriented programming, relatively easy to learn (working with code blocks). It also supports certain AS objects (profiles, sheets). Unfortunately not the connections yet.

 

The usage of parametric design in 2D for sketch directly in AS is also possible (standard in AutoCAD).

 

At the 3D-CAD level, AS cannot compete with CAD like SolidWorks, Inventor, etc. The steel structures in AS here are not solid (except for user objects). For Solidworks there are also extra products for steel construction (such SolidSteel parametric, …)

It's been a while since the discussion was started but I want to rectify some opinions what might be useful for future researchers...

I totally agree with @Anonymous that Dynamo is the way to use parametric design in Advance Steel (for now it's not developed as much as for Revit but...it is).

However, I must disagree with @lk - in AS we have the possibility to make objects related to project datum (I admit that not directly to the grids). It is possible by using levels and reference planes - look here:

Beyond argument is the fact that it's not as convenient workflow as by using similar options in Revit (constrains or global parameters in labels) and for sure not as effective and powerful as using Dynamo but...it is possible to make your work more automated and a bit flexible to project changes just by using only AS and its features (unfortunately not by using parametric dimensions)😉
