Drawing Flips on revision when adding holes to Beam web

I have up revised a drawing of a typical straight Beam with unique end plates either end (on a Angle both sides) as a result of the beam now requiring holes to be added to the beam web.

Once force update has been run , it turns out the beam drawing is now flipped , Section AA is now B-B and vice versa. But the actual drawing has been flipped its not just a case of the section labels being the other way around.

Why is this happening?

Also it should not happen.

How can i mirror the drawing so it is back to the original version and stop it mirroring on future drawings?

It would be good to be able to control the Section Labels - sure i can click the update/refresh button on the section/ detail label and refresh them , but being able to specify what I require while still keeping the intelligent links etc.. NOT having to delete my existing sections and sequentially re doing them due to the AS system changing them on the revised drawing.

I look forward to the AS teams response.

Hi

See attached REV 0 without holes in the web REV A with the holes added to the web.

The beam has two different angles each end so you can clearly see it has been flipped on REV A

Section A-A on drawing REVA now has ep1014 reference whereas before it was ep1013 and now ep1014 is on the LHS of the page as opposed to the right and ep1013 now on the RHS.

(Rev bubbles on A-A + B-B are my own to take account of the drawing flip )

Note : Ive had to move/vice versa the manual text; 'connect to B21' & 'connect to C9' on REV A to take account of the drawing flip.

I look forward to your comments.

Are the UCS of both Main Part the same (Rev0 and A) - before and after adding the holes?

It was set to world when the holes were added

however i did change ucs at object for the beam, to allow position adjustments on a Unequal Angle which is to be bolted to the web, but this did not affect the hole positions and It was set back to world afterwards

If force update was done before setting back to world , is this perhaps why?

Hi,

each single / main part (SP / MP) has internal UCS (right mouse button on object and ...). This is important also for the rotation of the part view on drawing.

Make a test, set the UCS on a profile, define SP / MP direction via these two commands:

When you create the drawing, you will see the result / dependency on the settings mentioned above. You can try different internal UCS settings to get the result as needed.

I  used UCS @ object (See attached)to align a unequal angle to theexisting beam's flange which modified the existing Beam(to revA).

Nothing else has been altered.

Regarding the two buttons you have highlighted in the prior post; i have clicked the icon and selected a beam, however there is no visual feedback from AS in anyway that anything has happened, no expected visual axis for me to change

so how exactly do these buttons work, what am I missing ?

I understand in principle what you are saying makes sense but I can not implement what you are saying.

Do you have a short video perhaps to explain?

I look forward to your reply and thank you thus far.

Take one main part profile, set the UCS to object and rotate the axis as needed for the view of the profile in the drawing (X and Y orientation). Now you can set the "inner" UCS part for drawing via the Define assembly detailing direction (it write the actually UCS into profile - via right mouse button on object you can see the Main / Single part UCS - it shows red view definition with object UCS) This is a UCS related to part creation, independent of the future UCS of the workspace. Now try to create a drawing of this profile. If you change the inner UCS one more time, it should change the profile orientation in the drawing after the update).

creating of new profile incl. numbering (to get SP / MP):

the drawing for the new profile:

right mouse button on object - to show the Assembly CS (it disappears after REGEN) - this CS is in this case different from what is needed in the drawing:

new definition for UCS on object (for workspace too):

apply the current UCS to profile Main Part (Assembly CS):

test of new Assebbly CS - the rotation of the profile as needed:

new profile orientation on the drawing after update via Document Manager:

Apply both assignments for new CS (Object detailing direction and Assembly detailing direction)

ah now it makes sense thank you.

i viewed and found a video from Autodesk which also made sense and helped

'Autodesk Advance Steel - Detailing Direction' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbgAeucOklk)

now everything makes sense.

From a user perspective its near impossibe to know this unless shown.

Why doesnt the "Define Detailing Direction SP/MP" icons/buttons actually do both processes at once instead of seting the UCS by object seperately and only then clicking the Define drawing buttons afterwards. Even then you have to R-Click object and show SP CS/Show assmebly CS to know and see what you have actually changed.

Thats 2-3 Steps with no visual cues anything has actually changed and then a shortcut R-Click menu which is pretty much another hidden step.

anyway i got there in the end and im grateful for your time, now i can control the output as I wish

Thanks again

You can save a lot of time if you create objects in the corresponding UCS (then automatically also the internal CS). This eliminates a lot of later adjustments to the CS orientation of the part for drawing.

It's a brain gym 😁😉
