Hi Buxtehude1963

Thank you for using Advance Steel forum.

I understand that the automatic placement of some dimensions does not respect the distances from Management Tools settings on your side.

It would be very helpful if you could attach your model, the generated detail and the settings you have done on your side.

I have tested the behavior on my side with a small model.

Please see attached an image with the settings I have done, the model and the generated detail.

You will notice that the distances depend on the dimensioned element and on the dimension type.

I hope these will help you. If you get a different behavior on your side, please let me know.

Best regards,
Emy

Hi Emanuel,

thanks for answer.

The problem is not on global dimensions but on local dimensions.

You can see the attached file of detail of your simple model where you can see that dimensions for m100 and m1003 are at 3 mm from elements.

I tried to change the variable setting (see yellow arrow in the picture) but nothing has changed.

Thanks for your help

Hi Buxtehude1963

Thank you for your reply and additional info. Not an easy case 🙂

The setting "Distance between local dimensions and objects" is used as long as the final position of the dimension is closer than the setting "Maximum distance for the local dimension arrangement process".

If the final position would be at a bigger distance, than the dimension is placed in a default (hard-coded determined) position, at 3 mm from the element.

I have done the following test:

- set the maximum distance for arrangement to 150 mm

- update your detail drawing

--> Please see attached the resulted detail: the dimension is arranged at 13 mm from the dimension created for the handrail

So this seems to be the case in your detail: the dimension could not be arranged in the previous limit (80 mm) and then the default arrangement is used.

Now, to determine why the dimension could not be arranged - I would need exactly your drawing style used to create the detail.

The easiest way would be to archive your AstorAddIn.mdb database and send it to me:

  • C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance Steel 2017\User2\Data\

Best regards,

Emy

Also, please let me know if you have further questions in this topic.

Best regards,

Hi,

setting the distances like you told i have the same your result.

But i was trying to put the dimensions like in the picture.

The positions of the dimensions for m100 and m1003 look like not dependent on the drawing style because the points of dimensions are correct in all cases (lenght of object) but they look like depending from distances set in "managment tools".

Hi Buxtehude1963

Thank you for your reply.

I understand the desired results, the expected dimension position.

I have re-created (at least partially) the drawing style that you were using and I have reproduced the behavior on a new drawing.

On my side, I have configured the "Dimension definition" to create horizontal dimension lines for all horizontal beams.

It seems that the dimension placement takes into account all these horizontal beams, not each beam for each separated dimension line.

I have documented this behavior and escalated to the development team for further investigations.

For now, as you probably already know, you would have to move the dimensions manually in the desired position.

I wish I could help you more on this.

Best regards

Emy
