Diagonal dimension on rectangular plate

Hi All,

I would like to set up a dimesnion showing the length of a diagonal on a plate element (eg dimension the distance from top left corner to bottom right corner of a rectangular plate). I can select the extreme points ok for hte dimension style, but I only seem to have the option of presenting the distance as either x or y orientation, not the actual diagonal (hypotenuse). Is there another setting I am missing ?

Thanks,

Jane

Hi Jane,

You need to use the 'Linear Sloped' option under the Parametric Dimensions tab in order to achieve this.

Hope this helps

I'm not sure if this could work, but you can try to set 2 different selection of points for one dimension strategy: both of them are object contour, or extreme size of the objects, or maybe beam ends processings... The first one you set point position to top left relative to object and the second one bottom right relative to object.

For the direction of the dimension chain you should set internal direction linear.

Hope that helps

Thank you for your input. This information is useful, but doesn't quite solve the problem that I am trying to address. I have attached a screenshot, showing the view that I am trying to dimension. The diagonal dimension currently shown has been added as a manual dimension after the detail has been created. I would like the diagonal to be part of the automatic dimensioning if this is possible.

Hi,

Previous answers are all correct as far as they go but the dimension you request is not possible in a drawing style at this time.

You can collect the two points but you cannot place an aligned dimension at that angle. You can only place dimensions Horizontally or Vertically relative to the View, the Main Part or the Object. All three are references are the same alignment in your view so there is nothing to reference the angle you want and therefore no way to dimension in that direction.

Those dimensions will have to be placed manually in the drawings.

Maybe setting the UCS by selecting 3 points, then you choose this diagonal as one of the axis. After that you set the dimension to be placed on that axis of the view. However, I'm afraid that would be more time-spending than setting the dimension manually, and your detailing would be inclined...

Thanks everyone for your input.

Aleck - can we include this feature on the wish list- how do I do that ?

Ricardo - I agree that your UCS method would work, however we currently already have the UCS set for our details so that we can control which side of the plate is interpreted as front / back in the detail drawing.

We will need to stay with the manual linear sloped dimensioning method for now. Hoping for this feature to be incorporated in a future release as it would be very useful to have.

Regards,

Jane
