Custom connetion update

Hi all,

I created a custom connection, applied it in a mock-up project. Went into the custom connection file, made some changes and saved it.

Now my question is how do I update the connection that are already placed in the project? New ones have the applied changes, but the old ones stay the same.

Need assistance  🙂

Thx

Hi,

Try using the Transfer Properties command in the Extended Modelling > Joint Utilities ribbon panel. Select the joints to update / change and accept, then select an example joint. The selected joints should all reconfigure to match the exmaple.

HI,

I see you change the oringal defintioin of the joint in the external file and then insert it again in the second location. If you want the joints to match you should be changing the joint in the finished model. Double clik the blue joint box or right click a part and select "Custom Connection Properties". Then tick "Allow modification".

Then you can edit the joint you have inserted just like it was the original pieces (anchor sizes, spacings, palte thickness etc). Once you have changed the anchor size you can use "Create By Template" or "Create Joint in a Joint Group" or "Transfer Properties" etc just like any other joint.

There is no need to change the definition file.

vuk.vukanik,

Let's assume that you have 3 columns where you want to insert your custom connection. Try something like this:

1. insert your custom connection using adequate tool only in one column

2. use tool "create connection in group" and copy that connection to two other columns.

3. now pick any of those connections (double click on the blue dialog box) and make sure that both options are ticked:

- update to main

- allow modify objects

3.5. If you want you can give to your connection some unique name so it was easier to localize.

4. now modify whatever you want in your connection

Despite I have set that connections should update automatically, in my situation it is not enough and still other connections are not updated. If you have the same problem:

5. select all connection boxes and click "update connections" button

Now every custom connection should be up to date.

Best regards

Robert

All good suggestions and work like they described, but...

The reason behind the idea to modify the definition connection is in order to add or remove objects from the connection joint. Allow object modification allows already existing elements in the joint to be modified, I was hoping to be able to add/remove object from the joint definition.

Lets say I want to add a stiffener plate to a custom connection that is already placed in the project. Other then making a new definition, placing it in the project and adding to the group joints one by one...

Is there another way of accomplishing this?

Bumping against the same issue you did. I have one custom connection copied 36 times, with 4 SEPARATE bolts in each. I hope you found an answer that you can share?

Sorry but there's no other workaround for it and in my opinion, this is good behavior.

Because if you change a custom connection, and this connection will be updated if you change the template, there a are few issues which will occur:

  • by opening a model, it will take minutes to have a look for all connection, if they're the same like the template
  • in your case you maybe use the template in one model...imagine you use it in 20 models and then change the template. Now you open the model which should be changed, and then you're very lucky, because all your connections will be updated--> OK. But then you open a model which have 100 of these connection, but these should not be updated--> Not OK.

I think there should be maybe a future request for it. My idea in this case: if a connection template is stored in the default folder, this connection should be same as in every model. But if ,you create a folder in the model folder itself (like the prototypes folder) and change the connection but don't change the name, the used user connections in model should be updated to the model stored connection folder template. Anyone with a better idea?

If we are talking about a solution, more user friendly would be to have a list of Custom Connections on the Update tab within Custom Connection Properties to chose once a connection has been created.
