Connection with curved beam

I want to connect a curved beam with a linear beam by using "Shear Plate" connection. But shear plate connection fails if the connected beam is curved (see the attached picture). AS puts the connection plate on the opposite side of main beam.  Other connection macros also fails. In some cases, connecting beam gets longer and becomes a complete circle. 

Is there a way to creat a correct shear plate connection with a curved beam? I am also attaching the model drawing.

Hi @kobeyapi,

From my experience I belive the macro currently doesnot support curved beam. You can creat a plate at the end of the curved beam using plate at polyline button and you can place the bolts on this plate.

 Hi @shefypattambi and thank you for your reply. In some cases, the connection macro works with curved beam. Even it connects one end of the beam, but doesn't the other. I want to know when and why it doesn't work correctly in some cases.

Had the same experience a couple of moths ago. At the end where you have the problem of the curved beam elongating apply connections manually without the macros. I had the curved beams connecting to a fascia channel and this worked.

I am sorry, the issue isn't solved. Mirroring lets the curved beam become a whole circle and connects from the same side. I attached the screen captures.

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry to hear that the suggested solution does not help. 

 

In this case, as @Anonymous mentioned earlier, the connections will need to be created manually, without using the macros. 

 

This behavior has been reported to our development team to further investigate and see if there is anything that can be done.

What I did on a previous project was to split the curved beam, see attached screenshot.

The green beam was the original with the start point at the connection end.

The pink beam was redrawn over the old split beam with the start point at the connection end then the old split beam deleted.

The connections on curved beams only seem to work on the start end of the beam as drawn.

Thank you for your reply. I also noticed that connection works on the start end, so it also tries to connect to other side by its start end point after a round tour with its radius. If we connect the curved beam by splitting it into two, then it will create two single parts, that we don't want. Finally, i had to create the connection manually, by copying the cuts, plates and connection objects.

Hi, what I did before was have a separate drawing of the full beams just for rolling purposes.

Whatever assembly number was given for the full beam in the separate rolling drawing I used for the main part for the split beam assembly, then just deleted the dimensions and labels for the assembly drawings where the beam was split.

You can create a temporary straight short secondary beam with the same angle towards the main beam as the rolled one, offset at X distance from the rolled beam, same size as the rolled beam, and create the shear plate connection. Explode the connection, and copy shear plate, bolts and copes and the shortening at the X distance with Advance Copy. The copes and the beam shorting will work in 90% of the cases, if one of them does not work, just do the cope manually. 

The short temporary beam-system line has to be tangent to the rolled beam at the intersection point with the main beam.

It works, I just did a project with rolled poly beams and a rotated main beam. Regards, Ilko Dimitrov, ACBS
