Cheat Railing to concrete

Is anyone aware of a workaround to mount railings to concrete and also use anchors to attach? It seems kinda silly that it won't let you choose a slab. I am currently adding a flat where I need the rail and giving it a role of "not visible". It pretty much seems to defeat the purpose of having a handy macro. 

Also am I supposed to trim all the kick plates manually to not interfere with the base plate?

That's the only way I'm aware to do it as well.  The macro bases a lot of it's dimensions for the rail on the system line of the beam you're referencing the rail to, so it seems the macro only works with beam objects.

There's really no other chance. But what is wrong with the flat? I'm doing it the same way. I choose a flat which have the same height, take the role not visible, and deactivate the checkbox for including it to BOM list. If it's a problem in the model I choose another layer and set it to off.

Nothing wrong with it but I sometimes wonder if someone found a better way to do things. Without posting it I may never know. I would like a better way to change the bolts to anchors though. A method that doesn't require exploding the railing joint properties 😄 I never stop exploring new, faster, accurate, more productive ways to get things done.

Yes the anchor...but this is work which we did one time and could use is for longer 😉
I create them without an automatic clamping length so they could be changed to every length which I want, work for the most situation.

Replace the base plate with a custom connection consisting of the end plate macro and then the bolts/anchor/hole on plate , this is feature on the custom connection palette.

Concrete beam. I did not try that.  Next time I will try that rail without a base plate on concrete beam and add the custom connection. I assume it will let anchors be included. Little off topic kinda but we use 3/8 anchors for typical use rails. Whats the best way to add 3/8" diameter to the database?

I'll tell you what I do, from my phone the best I can without pictures.

So we can sink post into concrete without breaking the rail macro here's what I do..

Insert a small plate (4x4 or whatever) at the bottom of the post so the top is flush with top of concrete. Move the plate vertically down into the concrete whatever depth you need. Copy this plate around to the posts you want to sink into the concrete. Use the cut by member command. It's next to the miter command on the menu. This will extend the post to the plate without breaking the rail macro. Don't enable the weld or else it will become part of the rail. 

I put the plates on the not visible role and unchecked the behavior for numbering etc. If you tweak your field drawing detail style to turn off the objects on the not visible role then it's like they are not there and your posts are sunk into the concrete. I actually added a selection filter to my template so I can select all temporary modeling items and hide them in the model so I don't have to look at them. 

I actually do the same similar using flat bar along the edge of slabs so I have something to fake the railing macro to. It's easy to put a 6" wide bar down and have the rail align to the center of it. This way I can also determine where I want rail splices. Split the bar wherever you want a rail splice. I would just copy the flat bar down 4" to get the embedment and cut to that member with square end cut.

I have an other challenge for you I notice in your screencast too the same issue, when the rail meet the loop is a small "elbow" how can I remove/delete without broking the macro?

Here's a screencast showing what I was trying to say in words. I show simply copying the flat bar I use as reference for the rail macro but any AS plate or member can be used the same way. After extending the posts, the copied part can be deleted and the posts will stay that length unless I update the macro by changing something else within the macro.

Hi,

I did a tutorial on COncrete Stairs and Rails some time ago you may like. It is on our Content Centre here called Concrete Stairs and Railings in Advance Steel. AS the name suggests, this includes putting the railings on and using Custom Connections to connect them to the concrete. There are dozens of other tutorials on the Content Centre too.

For making the railing post go into the concrete you could try using Cut at Object, tick "Straight Cut" and set the Gap to a negative value. If you are on a sloping concrete beam then a gap of zero will cut the beam to the original top surface of the beam and not the cut in step. SO you need to know how far the posts form the step surface - easy if in the middle of the step = half the rise, otherwise not so easy. If the value is known there are no dummy objects requried.

@milei4QF43  it is my understanding to spit rails you will need to xplode rail macros, loosing the intelligence of the rails. This is ok sometimes. Other times you may want to create two rails that meet with tiny gap, which can be testy. There may very well be better way, as on a scale of 1 to 100 my skill with AS is like .09, maybe a guru will chime in.
