I'm gonna take a dive in the next week and do a soup to nuts Railing drawing style creation video. I have a really good dimensioning  scheme developed for the style of  picket rails that we build most often in commercial settings.

 

With my rail return custom connections (featured in my first video) and the newest drawing style for that type of rail I'm getting these done and out to the fabricators much faster.

@bukko I preface this question with the fact that I have no idea what i'm doing,Smiley Surprised

 

When trying to understand the dim request section of your video, I see where you rotated the detail so the ladder is vertical, which makes sense. But then the UCS of the detail is 90 degrees to the UCS of the drawing. How did you change DS to auto rotate detail view? If you change UCS for detail orientation before detail creation, would the UCS of the detail be aligned with drawing (page) UCS?

 

Or does none of this effect the internal UCS of the objects being dimmed?

 

Not questioning your method, just trying to understand....

Hi Mule,


I'm gonna post a video tonight if possible and I'll give you a sure fire way to mentally navigate thru the construction plane madness so that you don't have to think as hard about it.


I've thought long and hard on how to explain how to visualize this in the clearest way possible. I've been modeling and creating in different 3d software since 1998 and I can tell you that the AST dim request tool is one of the most difficult tools to use of all modelers that I've been exposed to and the main reason for that is the lack of intuitive visual cues.


I was brainstorming about this last night and I think I've come up with a fool proof way of teaching a person how to use this tool so..... hang tight and I'll get the video up tonight.

 Your video is great by the way! Your at a level we are trying to be at!! Have you done another video on showing how you did more of the setup in the DSM? I am familiar with it and am trying to get our stuff more like yours but it takes so much time. Let me know if you can send me a link to another one of your videos.

Very useful video, a great example of how dim requests work.

Below is a sample scheme of a beam shown front, but same logic applies for beams and plates:
