Angle connection to Beam

Hi,

I'm trying to do a simple shear plate connection for a trimmer angle to beam. See attached images. When i use the shear plate connection it keeps placing the cleat on top of the angle when i want it on the side. I have rotate my UCS and it still places the cleat on top. How do you fix the angle to beam?

Thanks

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Try using the 'Fin Plate' connection from the platform beams section.

Hope this gives you a better result

As @Anonymous has said, the Fin Plate connection works best. See below Screencast.

Hi,

I believe "shear plate" and "fin plate" are the same thing just named differently in different countries.

When using Equal Angles it is very hard to tell which leg is considered the flange and which is the web. However, the Fin / Shear Plate joint will always place the plate on the WEB of the beam. Hence in your pictures I believe you will find the web is the horizontal leg. (For unequal angles the long leg is the web).

You could rotate the angle by 90deg and then mirror it, but I would recommend redrawing the angle picking the end points in the opposite sequence. According to your images drawing from bottom right to top left and then rotating by 180deg should give you the angle in the correct orientation without using the mirror option. (The mirror option can confuse some joints so I prefer to avoid it if I can).
