As part of our Turner and Townsend _PMCM coordination initiative, we recently participated in a focused technical session with Autodesk, along with key stakeholders from GC – Tata Projects (Alok) and A/E – Arup (Manmohan), to review the early access Tekla Connector integration with Autodesk Construction Cloud and Revit.
During this session, we explored interoperability workflows between Tekla Structures and Autodesk platforms, identifying key challenges and limitations in the current beta version:
🛠 Key Challenges Observed:
- Excessive conversion time (~8 hours)
- Element explosions during conversion (e.g., weld components)
- Unexpected 5mm tolerance applied
- Auto-mapping to generic models in Revit
- Project parameter mismatches
- Inaccurate origin and rotation on import
- Non-editable geometry in Revit (🔄 Now partially addressed by Autodesk in Revit 2025 with editable IFC elements – 25MB & 5000 element limits)
- Clash detection limitations due to dumb solids , Coordination issues and doubled copied elements after conversion from Tekla to Revit through IFC format.
💡 Important Note:
Autodesk advised using the latest software versions. While non-editable Tekla elements can’t be opened in Revit 2023, limitations on file size and element count still exist.
👉 We strongly recommend using Revit 2025 or newer (2026+) for optimal results when working with the Tekla Connector.
🙏 Special thanks to Daniel Smolilo and Gaurav Bhamre from Autodesk for their ongoing support and valuable insights during this collaboration.
📣 We invite fellow BIM practitioners to share your feedback and observations while testing the plugin. We’ll be happy to consolidate and represent them in the next coordination meeting with Autodesk.
