Measure to midpoint & quadrant

I am working on my first real project in IV. I have read all of the posts
about the measuring tool but I need a definitive answer.

Is it really impossible to measure from a quadrant or midpoint to anywhere?
I just spent 1/2 hour trying to figure out how to measure the distance
between the midpoints of 2 lines. I refuse to accept that I have to use a
calculator to do this!

I hate to go back to MDT but if this is the best IV can do I will have to. I
use the measurement tool in MDT constantly to check my work. I can't work
without a full function measurement tool.

How are the rest of you surviving without it?

Thanks for any help and advice you can give. I love so many of the features
in IV that I don't want to give it up.

I have had some difficulty getting used to the measurement tool as well. But, over time, you get adept in finding the measurements you need. There have been a few instances that i had to make datum features to measure too, but they are few and far between.

Bottom line is, you have to train your brain to work in inventor, many of the things we did in old programs do not translate to Inventor. The benefits of the program have far outweighed the negatives so far though.

You could try and add a couple of workpoints to the midpoints of the
lines/edges. Then IV will measure between them. Quadrants are a problem,
sometimes you have to make a dummy IDW and measure in the 2d environment.

Bit of a pain, tho...

Cindy,

There are a couple of choices.

-Add sketch points to sketches and leave the sketches visible-the Measure
Tool will "see" them.

-Add Workpoints/Workfeatures to the part to use for measuring.

-create a "dummy" part and (with assembly sectioning on) project "cut" edges
and dim the geometry adding sketch points/geometry as needed. This method is
non parametric and more of a sledgehammer approach for "curvy-swoopy" parts.

There is a VB app on Kent's iCode page called the "Ruler"... it's kinda neat
in that it will give you a "visual" on the delta x and y; it also supports
filtering between points, surfaces, and lines.

You beat me to mentioning "The Ruler" Quinn. 🙂 One of my former coworkers
wrote that routine primarily to make measurements between curved surfaces.
It works pretty slick.

Thank you for the fabulously constructive answer. The workpoints on the part
did the trick. I was even able to apply them to quadrants and get
measurements there too.

I even found the "object visibility" menu to turn those points on and off as
needed.

Thanks!

Cindy

I figured out how to load "the ruler" and it IS a neat little tool!

It will come in handy measuring the perpendicular to a diameter.

Thanks!

Oops, spoke too soon. I am able to put workpoints at the quadrants of radii
but not diameters...

Start a new sketch (project the dia/hole), and sketch in some
points/geometry.

Leave the sketch visible and drop workpoints to the sketch geometry.

Make sketch invisible.

Go back to assembly; use your Object Visibility to control the visibility
of the WorkPoints.

If I just want to know the dim of something I usually hover over the sketch
in the browser and the sketch dims become visible. With them visible,
they're changeable as well without going to the sketch.
