Teacher in my district claims that this software can be run off a server which has it installed. Meaning the client will not need anything installed, just a icon to the shared drive. This cannot be done correct?
each client machine needs to have it installed locally
unless the teacher is thinking about running it in a cloud computing enviroment

This would only be true if the product were AutoCAD Map 3D 2009, 2010, or 2011 and the server were Windows Server 2003 running XenApp 4.5 or 5.0. System Requirements and supported versions of XenApp are different for each release of AutoCAD Map 3D. Make sure to check the Map 3D Citrix Documentation for these System Requirements. A special version/SKU is required for AutoCAD Map 3D for Citrix that includes a license agreement addendum granting the ability to self host a product on XenApp. Otherwise you would be violating the End User License Agreement (EULA).
