I have no Thumbnail views

installed 2011 again today, Windows XP I have Admin Priv. I also had antivirus turned off, did all of windows update before installing. I still have no previews when I set to thumbnail view. I have a generic winows Icon that looks like a box with six stars in it. Like there is no association to a program linked to the files. I can open an old file, and I can create a new part.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Travis

Are you saving from Inventor (I assume this is for Inventor) with preview images? Right click the file in Inventor, Choose properties, Choose the Save tab. There is a checkmark for “Save Preview Picture”. Then four options on what view is saved as the preview picture.

yes I am saving with preview images. the thumbnails for all my old files is a generic windows icon like window does not associate this file with any program. I am sure it is a proble between windows and inventor.

Can you clarify? Is it that the Windows Explorer is not displaying the file type icon or that the preview thumbnail is not displayed?

If I open windows explorer and go to the folder with my inventor drawings all of the drawings ( .ipt, .iam, .idw, etc) have a windows Icon displayed (beside the file name if view is set to "details". same icon but larger if view is set to "thumbnails) as a windows generic screen like windows does not know what program created it.

If I open Inventor and click "open" and go to the folder with the drawings they appear the same as above

If I open Inventor and click "new" I have the option to create  an .ipt, or .iam etc, but the normal icon for a IPT is a cube, the normal icon for a IAM is 3 cubes. My inventor shows the generic windows icon instead of the cube/cubes/

I’ll assume then that it is the Icon and not the Thumbnail you are not getting to display.
Try this form a command line in Windows:

     “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2011\Bin\Inventor.exe” /install

It should reassociate theses file types and allow Windows to display the expected icons for them.

I asked an Inventor tech about this he gave me lots of options for different circumstances. This command line was the one for the Icon display problem. I’ll check back in with him and see what is recommended next.

I had to delete then replace the double quotes when I tried this on a test box I have. Also make sure you double check the path is correct your Inventor may be installed in a different path. You should reboot the computer when this is done.

It won’t look like it is doing much and does not return anything to the command line when it is complete. You should however notice the mouse pointer changing to the hourglass for a bit after you start it.

Try it again and let us know how it works.
